We urge the people in Central Bengaluru to plan their travels very carefully as the KR Market Flyover (Balagangadharanatha Swamiji Flyover) has experienced a significant traffic diversion due to ongoing infrastructure work.
The flyover loop road from Chamarajpet to the flyover has been closed for about 3 months to enable white-topping work, Bengaluru Traffic Police said. The closure will be a blow to thousands of people on this busy road daily, particularly those moving around Town Hall where the flyover is located with KR Market, Chamarajpet, Basavanagudi.
The project is part of the city’s efforts to improve the quality and durability of major roads. White-topping is a concrete surface that is laid over existing roads and is more durable, less maintenance-oriented and is more convenient for driving. While it’s a project with long-term prospects, the temporary closure is likely to be very frustrating for motorists in the months to come.
According to traffic authorities, the closure will affect the loop road that vehicles travelling from Town Hall via the BGS Flyover will go directly to Chamarajpet. This connection will be closed during the construction period and commuters will have to find other routes. The diversion is expected to lead to traffic congestion especially during the morning and evening peak.
Bengaluru Traffic Police have issued an advisory which suggests alternative routes for the motorists. Vehicles heading to Chamarajpet are supposed to go to Mysore Road and then Ryan Circle to reach their destination. They urge the users to follow traffic signage and police directions while using these alternate routes.
The closure will affect the commuters not only to Chamarajpet but also to nearby areas like Basavanagudi, one of Bengaluru's busiest residential/commercial zones. Traffic volumes on the neighborhood roads will be substantially increased because the direct loop road is not open and this can cause slower travel times and could lead to congestion during busy times.
The traffic experts say infrastructure upgrades in densely populated urban areas often require temporary restrictions to keep workers safe and maintain construction quality. And yes, there will always be short-term inconvenience but the benefits of road repairs are better road conditions, safety and quicker traffic flows in the long run. White-topped roads are much more durable than asphalt roads and are better suited to withstand Bengaluru’s heavy traffic and weather conditions.

If necessary, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) may change some routes in case of traffic congestion during the construction phase. The project is managed by B-SMILE and is supported by local municipalities responsible for road development. Residents and commuters have welcomed the initiative for road development but expect the programme to be completed within the allotted time so as not to cause chaos in the process.
