It has left residents so desperate for drinking water to be able to get their daily supply of clean drinking water that they are anxious for water-borne diseases to spread and worry about the spread of water-borne diseases in the case of the current situation.

Residents Raise Alarm Over Polluted Water

The water provided by the Cauvery pipeline has become visibly contaminated and unsafe for drinking, cooking, and other household purposes, residents say.

Families have said that the water contains impurities and emits an unpleasant smell, and many households buy bottled water or go for other sources of drinking water.

The situation has caused great hardship to children, senior citizens, and people who already have health problems.

The Private Company's Excavation Work Blamed

Residents claim that the contamination was caused by careless excavation work in the area of a private company.

Local people believe that the ongoing infrastructure work has damaged underground water pipelines, allowing sewage or contaminated water to mix with the Cauvery drinking water supply.

The citizens have asked the authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and investigate anyone who may have been responsible if negligence is found.

Demand for Immediate Action

Residents have asked the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and other civic authorities to restore safe drinking water at the earliest.

Their key demands include:

  • Immediate repair of the damaged water pipelines.
  • Supply of clean drinking water through water tankers until normal service resumes.
  • Comprehensive testing of the affected water supply.
  • Accountability for the agency that is responsible for the damage.
  • Measures to prevent future situations.
  • Health Risks Remain a Concern.

Such drinking infected water can be life-threatening, public health experts say, with diarrhoea, typhoid or cholera, and other water-borne diseases.

Therefore, residents are advised to avoid drinking tap water until officials have verified that the supply of water at the tap water is safe to drink. Boiling water before use or using purified water is strongly recommended as a precautionary measure.

Residents Seek Permanent Solution

The incident has once more exposed Bengaluru’s growing challenges of the city’s urban infrastructure needs for development, water supply management, and coordination in managing development works.

Neighbors say that although the city already has seasonal water shortages, problems with contamination of drinking water are raising people’s burden even further.

They are now calling on civic agencies to closely monitor infrastructure projects and beef up safeguards so that critical public utilities like drinking water pipelines are safeguarded.

The affected families would like to see the government make a quick recovery in the normal water supply and implement long-term plans to avoid such disruption in the future.
