Bengaluru is still one of the key places for electric vehicle adoption in Karnataka, and more than half of all electric vehicles in the state were registered in Bengaluru in August 2026. Transport Department data shows that 13,389 electric vehicles were registered in Bengaluru in the month, which accounts for 50.3% of the 26,636 electric vehicles in Karnataka.
The figures underscore the growing electric mobility presence in the city, especially in the two-wheeler segment. Electric scooters and motorcycles accounted for the largest share of new EV registrations in Bengaluru during August.
In August, Bengaluru had more than 13,000 electric vehicles registered
According to the data, Bengaluru recorded 76,508 new vehicle registrations in August. Of these, 13,389 were electric vehicles, accounting for about 17.5% of all new vehicle registrations in the city during that month.
That means roughly one in every six new vehicles registered in Bengaluru in August was electric. At that time, the city added more than 430 new electric vehicles to its registered vehicle fleet on average in the month.
In total, Bengaluru registered around 2,500 new vehicle registrations every day for the same period, indicative of the size of the city's vehicle market.
Electric two-wheelers dominate Bengaluru's EV market
Electric two-wheelers remained the biggest contributor to Bengaluru's EV registrations in August. This month, 9,453 electric two-wheelers were registered in the city, which accounts for around 71% of all new electric vehicle registrations.
On average, nearly 300 electric two-wheelers were registered in Bengaluru every day during August.
There are many electric scooters and motorcycles, and their popularity in the urban market indicates their increasing use for commuting. There is also a sense of fuel savings, relatively low running costs, and very different price points in electric two-wheelers according to the market.
Electric cars are also up
Electric cars were another important category of new EV registrations in Bengaluru. In August, the city registered 1,258 new electric car registrations, representing around 9% of all new electric vehicle registrations.
This amounts to an average of 40 electric cars being registered every day during the month.
The remaining electric vehicle registrations were taxis, three-wheelers, buses, and other vehicle types, suggesting that EV adoption is also spreading beyond private two-wheelers and cars.
Bengaluru has more than 4.9 lakh registered EVs
The growth is not limited to monthly registrations. By August 30, Bengaluru had more than 490,000 registered electric vehicles, according to the figures provided.
Karnataka's total registered EV count was around 890,000, which means Bengaluru accounted for 56% of the total registered electric vehicles in the state.
Electric two-wheelers are the largest category in Bengaluru’s electric vehicle fleet with about 380,000 vehicles. The city also had 46,596 electric cars.
The commercial sector has also seen more EV adoption. Bengaluru had 9,922 electric motor taxis, 6,855 passenger three-wheelers, and 9,876 goods three-wheelers registered.
In total, there are over 2,000 electric buses registered
Electric buses are also part of Bengaluru's expanding EV ecosystem. According to data, 2,009 electric buses have been registered in the city's RTO jurisdiction.
The presence of electric buses, taxis, and commercial three-wheelers indicates that electrification is extending into public and commercial transportation as well as private vehicle ownership.
Karnataka’s EV registrations, on the other hand, have increased dramatically
Karnataka has seen an exponential increase in electric vehicle registrations over the last several years.
In 2019-20, there were 7,155 electric vehicle registrations in the state and 46,140 in 2021-22. In 2022-23, the total number of annual registrations approached 100,000.
In 2025-26, annual EV registrations were reported to have crossed 230,000. Compared with 2019-20, the annual number of electric vehicle registrations in 2025-26 was therefore more than 32 times higher.
In Karnataka, electric two-wheelers are around 730,000 vehicles, while electric cars are about 65,915. Commercial vehicles and other vehicles make up the rest of the EV fleet.
EVs still represent a small share of Bengaluru's total vehicle fleet
Despite the rapid increase in electric vehicle registrations, EVs still represent a relatively small fraction of Bengaluru's overall registered vehicle fleet.
As of August 30, the city had around 13 million registered vehicles. More than 490,000 of them were electric vehicles, so EVs made up about 3.8% of the total registered vehicle population.
Even though new EV registrations are increasing, petrol and diesel vehicles still account for the vast majority of vehicles on the roads in Bengaluru, the figures show.
Charging infrastructure has become increasingly important
As electric mobility grows, the demand for charging infrastructure is becoming more pressing. With more electric cars, two-wheelers, buses, and commercial vehicles coming into the road network, the need for convenient charging facilities will be more important for EV users.
Karnataka, under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, had received support for electric mobility including electric buses. As of July 22, 2026, the figures cited in the report stated 267,127 electric vehicles had been supported in Karnataka and 4,500 electric buses had been allocated to Bengaluru.
Karnataka also has a huge network of public EV charging stations to support electric mobility in the state.
Price, battery technology, and charging network to shape future growth
Annual registration numbers for August show that electric vehicle adoption in Bengaluru is continuing to grow significantly, especially in the two-wheeler segment.
But some factors are surely going to have an impact on how quickly the market expands in the future. Vehicle prices, battery technology, charging infrastructure, public transport electrification, and the financial benefits available to consumers will all play a role in future EV adoption.
Bengaluru is still the largest place in the state for electric vehicle registrations, with electric two-wheelers accounting for the vast majority of new EV registrations in Bengaluru.
