The Karnataka Health Department has conducted fresh raids on restaurants operating at the Legislators’ House in Bengaluru near Vidhana Soudha, where officials reported finding serious hygiene issues in the inspection, the Karnataka Health Department said.
Health officials are stepping up inspections of food establishments in Bengaluru in the face of increasing concern about food safety and hygiene standards. At restaurants at the Legislators’ House premises, officials found unhygienic conditions, such as cockroaches in the kitchen.
The discovery has raised questions about whether or not cleanliness and food-safety practices are being followed in restaurants serving food in a location that is frequented by legislators, government officials, staff and visitors.
Health officials conducting inspections also assess many things about a food establishment: kitchen hygiene, food storage, cleanliness of utensils and cooking areas, pest control measures, water quality, waste disposal and compliance with food-safety regulations.
Cockroaches are especially problematic for a kitchen where pests can enter the kitchen and get into the food. Pest control and regular cleaning should be done for any facility that prepares and serves food.
At the Legislators’ House, a wider food-safety inspection was conducted in Karnataka. Restaurant, hotel and bakery inspections have been increasing, and authorities have been making surprise visits to restaurants, hotels and other food establishments to ensure that food businesses are in compliance with hygiene guidelines.
