A Bengaluru City Police “free IPL tickets” post shared on its official account on X that was not fake on any level but in disguise in order to educate people about cyber fraud on the internet on April Fool's Day itself.
The post, that caught on quickly, featured a poster for the police offering free IPL tickets. Users could click on a link in the bio to participate. Now given that the Indian Premier League is very popular, many users were taken into this and went to look for that page hoping that it was true.
But the catch was that there was no such giveaway. Instead that post mimics the tactics of the cyber criminals from popular events like the IPL by pulling in innocent victims.
Smart April Fool’s Day Mail.
April Fool’s Day came just after the awareness campaign started; that really served to attract public attention. The police demonstrated how easily people can fall for fraudulent offers by tapping into the excitement about IPL tickets - which are in very high demand but a short supply - he wrote.
People said the intent of the post was to show the dangers of clicking on the unknown or suspicious links - such as free access or exclusive deals - where one walks out there and becomes really worried about you.

Warning Against Cyber Fraud
As such this initiative was implemented, Bengaluru Police issued an extensive advisory to ensure that no website is opened that looks too good to be true, and don’t take home with that good price. Cybercriminals do so by creating fake websites or phishing links to take in personal information or banking passwords when available, to steal that information (which may include actual information, which can be used to make banking and login credentials, etc.).
As such, in the case of major events such as IPL scams with ticket booking and giveaway and discount, such are high.
Public Reaction and Impact
The post on Quora received mixed reactions online. Some of the users were convinced it was a genuine offer but most people later liked what the Police did for them by promoting awareness.
Even cybersecurity experts praised these efforts in that as a result, the information we can get in our real-life simulations is more effective than traditional warnings they do as educational tools to make people aware of risks on online sites.
Staying Safe Online
Police have instructed our citizens to practice basic cyber safety precautions:
- Before entering link-related information, verify sources.
- Avoid sharing personal or financial information online.
- Use licensed online ticket booking and purchasing platforms for booking travel tickets or tickets.
The campaign is a reminder that awareness is the first line of defense against cybercrime in the digital age. Bengaluru Police is doing a commendable job turning a prank into an assignment to keep on top of things online especially during demand events in such a high-profile way as IPL.
