Bengaluru Quarry Blast: 7 Dead, Several Injured in Suspected Illegal Mining Explosion

A quarry explosion at the outskirts of Bengaluru killed at least seven workers and injured several others, with the worst number of people injured in the region’s history of illegal mining activities, when the quarry explosion on Wednesday morning was particularly horrific. The blast happened near Chikkanahalli in the village of Hulavenahalli, located in the Yeshwanthpur Assembly constituency of the village where a lot of the workers work, and the village falls under the Yeshwanthpur Assembly constituency.

According to initial reports, workers were doing quarry work when a massive blast triggered a huge rock collapse. The blast is believed to have been caused by gelatin sticks and other explosives that are used to break large rock formations. But the blast was too powerful to be safe to use, and huge boulders were thrown into workers who were working at the site.

As of now, at least seven labourers are feared dead, and more than five others are injured, the agency said. Rescuers rushed to the site and carried out a huge rescue operation to get people who were trapped under the debris. Four bodies have been recovered, and search and rescue efforts are in progress.

The workers were immediately sent to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Medical officials say that at least some victims are still in critical condition, and the death toll could continue to rise.

The explosion rocked nearby villages, and residents reported a loud explosion that could be heard from a very long distance. Residents rushed to the scene ahead of police and emergency services. Senior police officers and district officials were at the scene, secured the surrounding area, conducted the rescue and started a preliminary investigation.

The quarry may have been operating in violation of the licenses and approvals and had been doing so for years, local sources said. Strong explosives were being used regularly and were not required to be used in line with safety regulations. So now investigators have to determine if negligence, accidental blasting or illegal mining caused the tragedy.

Public outrage was heard, and people questioned how such operations were allowed to continue despite the prior concerns. And the same quarry had been in the news in the past after a leopard was reportedly killed when rocks and debris from a blasting operation struck the animal. Critics say that mining and forest authorities could have done more to prevent the recent disaster.

There are also questions about the people and entities behind the quarry’s operations. Residents and activists have called for a thorough investigation into whether influential people or vested interests enabled the continuation of illegal mining activities despite repeated complaints.

Authorities have started collecting evidence from the site, including the explosives used and the legal status of the quarry. Permits are to be checked, operational records will be examined, and those who are responsible for any alleged violations will be found.

Families of the victims are anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones. Such a tragedy has once again exposed workers in unregulated industries and has fueled calls for tighter control of quarrying in Karnataka.

As rescue efforts continue, the state administration is expected to announce further action against those found responsible for the incident. A full investigation will be undertaken to determine the true cause of the explosion and hold those responsible for the loss of life accountable.
