In a tragic incident that has shocked residents, a 38-year-old migrant worker ended his life by jumping under a moving tipper truck in Bengaluru, just two days after arriving in the city in search of work.
The deceased has been identified as Raju Pahariya Ravant, a daily wage labourer who had recently travelled from Chano village in Jharkhand. According to police sources, Raju arrived in Bengaluru by train on April 11, hoping to find better employment opportunities.
He soon secured a job at a construction site near Kengeri, where he had been working for only two days. On April 13, at around 1:30 PM, Raju was reportedly sitting near a roadside shop in the Kumbalagodu area. Eyewitnesses say that without any apparent warning, he suddenly ran onto the road and jumped under a moving tipper truck.
The vehicle, bearing registration number KA-51-AM-6579, ran over him, leading to his death on the spot. The shocking act was reportedly captured on nearby CCTV cameras, leaving onlookers deeply disturbed.
Police officials from the Kumbalagodu Police Station have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that it was a case of suicide, though the exact reasons behind the extreme step remain unclear.
Authorities are trying to piece together the circumstances that may have driven Raju to take such a drastic decision within such a short span of time after arriving in the city. Investigators are also looking into whether he was facing financial distress, mental health struggles, or personal issues.
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers in large cities. Leaving behind their homes and families, many such workers come to urban centers with hopes of a better livelihood, only to face uncertainties, isolation, and pressure.
Local residents expressed shock over the incident, stating that Raju appeared normal before the sudden act. “He was just sitting there quietly. No one expected something like this,” an eyewitness said.
Police have informed the family members of the deceased and are making arrangements to send the body back to his native place. Further investigation is underway to determine all aspects related to the case.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the need for better support systems for migrant workers, including access to mental health resources and social assistance, especially during their initial days in a new city.
