A case filed in Talaghattapura Police Station with the complaint that her husband, Harish Kumar, mother-in-law Karthigai Valli, and brother-in-law Rakesh Kumar had been brought against her in 2016, a case was registered.

According to the interviews, Bhuvaneshwari married Harish Kumar, a software engineer, about 4 years after a marital relationship in which both families approved. There were reported massive expenses to the tune of almost ₹25 lakh for gold and other dowry items to conduct the wedding. It also has a child of one-and-a-half yrs. Nevertheless, the family alleges that Bhuvaneshwari suffered psychological and physical abuse by her husband and his family soon after the marriage concluded.

She was reportedly coerced into bringing in extra cash from her parents and being asked to come and contribute ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 a month from her own earnings. The alleged harassment really began to take a toll on her mental health. She even had consulted with a counsellor for stress and depression, the complaint also said.

She is reported to have been sent back to her parents' house in October 2022, and her husband reportedly cut her off. After Bhuvaneshwari and her family tried to reestablish the relationship repeatedly, Harish Kumar allegedly refused to reestablish the relationship between them and instead urged her to decide about getting divorced. And she was said to have been threatened once she refused.

Bhuvaneshwari had previously lived with her mother and baby in a house in JP Nagar, in a flat before the divorce. She was believed to have committed suicide by dangling from a ceiling fan on Monday afternoon, from 12:45 to 1:45 pm. The problem came after a friend tried to reach her on multiple occasions but got nothing in return.

Fearing, the friend called her mother, who, with help from neighbours, burst the door to find Bhuvaneshwari unresponsive. Also, even during significant family meetings such as a funeral in her husband’s family, Bhuvaneshwari was mistreated and barred from participating in rituals, the complaint continues. Police are now filing a case under the appropriate sections about dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.

An investigation has taken place, and there have already been documented reports from family members and other people who were there. This tragic narrative has also revealed the degree to which dowry-based abuse has been in effect across generations and how traumatised people become targets of it.

Authorities have emphasised the importance of reporting such harassment as well as the need to report it, and to prompt legal and social services for victims of domestic abuse at an early stage of abuse, in the event it occurs.
