A drama in Bengaluru’s Agrahara Dasarahalli neighborhood turned into a nightmare on Wednesday night when locals allegedly repelled an attempt to abduct a 21-year-old woman who had married against her family’s wishes. A police chase through parts of West Bengaluru followed in which the woman’s car allegedly collided with more than 20 vehicles, the police told Times Now.
Pooja, 21, and Omprakash, 23, originally from Melvas village in Rajasthan, had married against their families’ wishes and moved to Bengaluru a few months ago, the police said. The couple lived together at Agrahara Dasarahalli. Their decision to marry had not been accepted by their families, they said.
Police said four men entered the couple’s residence around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The men allegedly assaulted Omprakash before taking Pooja out of the house and putting her in a waiting car, according to police. Residents in the area, hearing the woman’s cries for help, rushed to intervene.
Omprakash also alerted the police and gave details about the vehicle used by the alleged abductors. Such information helped authorities and locals track the vehicle as it allegedly sped away towards the Govindarajanagar-Vijayanagar route.
The chase soon turned into a dangerous chase. Police said the car collided with more than 20 vehicles as it fled, and one of those vehicles was said to have been a judge's car. Six people were injured (two children, one child and one man) at the time of the accident.
The injured were identified as Prithviraj, 12, Yashika, 9, Amul, 35, Mani, 64, Jayalakshmi, 57, and Santosh, 33. Jayalakshmi suffered a serious head injury and was admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital. The condition of the other injured persons was not disclosed.
Two local residents Deepak and Kiran, along with several others, decided to follow the fleeing car. The chase lasted 6 to 7 kilometres as people tried to stop the car from leaving with the woman.
The car was finally intercepted near Hosahalli in Vijayanagar by other residents. Police said the occupants tried to drive away again and people gathered at the site to surround the vehicle. In the process, locals threw stones at the car.
Saddam, the alleged driver, escaped during the chaos and is still absconding, police told us. Pooja was rescued from the vehicle, while three other alleged accused were caught by locals and handed over to the police.
The arrested suspects were identified as Rakesh, 21, Karan, 25, and Ayas, 18, the report says. The three are from Rajasthan. Police have seized the vehicle, which had a Rajasthan registration number, and a machete in the car, said the police chief.
Yathish N, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru West), said police got a call from Pooja’s husband after she was allegedly taken away from their residence. He said the vehicle later collided with several other vehicles and local people tried to stop it after the crashes. Three suspects are in police custody and the alleged driver is at large.
The police have registered a case at Magadi Road Police Station under charges including abduction, assault, and causing a road accident. Investigators are also examining whether additional people were involved in the alleged abduction and whether the arrested suspects had received assistance from anyone else.

Local residents’ role has been a major part of the incident. Deepak and Kiran said they heard the woman’s cries and began following the vehicle after the suspects allegedly sped away. They were in four or five vehicles with others pursuing the car, they said.
The abduction and subsequent chase also raised serious road-safety concerns because of the number of vehicles apparently hit during the escape attempt. Injured pedestrians or motorists, especially the two children and the woman who suffered a serious head injury, have added to the gravity of the incident.
Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction, the assault on Omprakash, the vehicle crashes, and the escape of Saddam. Officers are also trying to find the absconding accused and make sure the whole sequence of events is followed.
For the residents in the area, they’re shocked, as what started as an alleged attempt to forcibly take a woman from her home quickly turned into a car chase across several kilometres. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be gained on the suspects and the evidence from the vehicle and the accident scene will be investigated, police say.
