Bengaluru faces a gentle revolution, one on three wheels. Women auto drivers were once not a common sight but now they are considered symbols of women financial independence and power throughout the city. An extraordinary anecdote published on social media has recently described an inspiring lady auto driver from Koramangala who is making her life on the run, and shattering social norms in the process.
A Chance Encounter
The story came to light to public awareness after the passenger Sneha Prabhu shared her experience on X (formerly Twitter). She booked a ride through the 'Namma Yatri' app and was met by a female pilot. On the road, the driver discussed with me her motivation as she earned (on average) ₹45,000 every month and occasionally earns more depending on the demand.
From Training to Ownership
The driver’s journey to independence then started with a 40-day dedicated training journey organised by Namma Yatri. Easily handling an eco-friendly electric auto-rickshaw, she took a loan to start up a business. She has already paid back ₹2.5 lakh of her loan and has shown incredible financial discipline.

Koramangala Sisterhood
The extent of participation of women in the sector has proven to be one of the most shocking findings from the conversation. The driver said there are nearly 300 women auto drivers alone operating across Koramangala. They keep their friendship close, helping support each other in a field typically used by men.
Public Support and Safety
Contrary to stereotypes, the driver said she has never encountered rudeness or discrimination from the public. “I have never been looked down upon. Instead people are super supportive,” she said to the passenger. She told heartwarming stories about waiting at traffic signals where girls and women smile at her as they approach. “When passengers wish me well, it really instills confidence for me,” she said. “And you know, I am really happy with my work,” she said.
Viral Impact
The post has more than 3 million views and roused a flood of positive comments. The rise of electric mobility and the increasing number of women in the transport sector have been praised by netizens, and the fact that more female drivers mean late-night driving at night now feels much safer, according to netizens, for them.
