Patna, Bihar: Increasing water levels of the Ganga has started affecting residential areas around Kangan Ghat in Patna and floodwater is beginning to inundate some of the low-lying parts of the city.
The issue is causing fear for people living near the riverfront as the river is overflowing.
Several ghats along the Ganga have been affected by the rising water. Kangan Ghat is one of the areas affected by the inundation and water has spread to other areas.
There has been action by the authorities to protect the public from entering dangerous and submerged areas (see Fig.).
The rising river has also disrupted normal activities along Patna’s riverfront. Places that usually see regular movement are now partly covered by water, while residents in nearby neighbourhoods are keeping a close watch on the situation.
The water level is monitored and officials are monitoring the amount and doing everything to minimize the effects of the flooding, officials say. Patna Municipal Corporation has also reinforced its preparedness in areas in which waterlogging and flooding are most prone.
Measures are now in place to prevent river water from flowing into the city’s drainage system through vulnerable places.
Pumping equipment has been kept ready to remove excess water from affected areas if necessary. The Ganga is swollen and authorities are watching the riverfront all the time.
The flood situation has impacted several parts of Bihar, with the Ganga and other major rivers having high water levels at different places. Low-lying and riverine communities are especially vulnerable as water continues to spread to flood-prone areas.
Rescue and relief preparations have been stepped up. Boats and emergency teams are being deployed in vulnerable locations, while arrangements are being made to assist people who may need to move to safer areas.

Relief facilities are also being prepared with essential supplies such as food, drinking water and medical assistance.
The immediate concern for people living near Kangan Ghat is that there are fears that the Ganga will continue to rise and more flooding will take place.
In vulnerable areas, people who live near Kangan Ghat have been advised by local authorities to be alert and follow instructions.
The flooding has once again exposed the vulnerability of settlements near the Ganga during periods of high water. Officials are advising residents to avoid the ghats, riverbanks, and other dangerous areas.
With the Ganga still swollen, Patna authorities are keeping emergency measures in place.
The priority is to prevent more water from entering residential areas of the city, protect local people, and ensure that relief and rescue actions happen as soon as possible if the situation worsens.
