Karnataka is now experiencing a fresh wave of division after BJP MLA Yashpal Suvarna attacked Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha to the point of violence for his comments in front of the protesting masses of the people in Udupi. The Udupi legislator warned that Hindus will destroy Rahul Gandhi’s political career in the same manner as the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992. The comments generated immediate condemnation from opposition parties, civil society, and left-wing organizations, and the government was quick to respond.
The inflammatory remarks were made at a local protest organized by the BJP in Udupi in the wake of student protests and political activities. Besides the focus on Rahul Gandhi's ancestry and political history, Suvarna also criticized critics, including actor-activist Prakash Raj, and it was a high level of rhetoric that elevated the event. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Congress leaders condemned the meeting as political hooliganism and mafia-like intimidation threatening the public peace and democratic order. So police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the legislator to investigate the legality and intent of his explosive comments.

Yashpal Suvarna has a long history of high-profile political controversies and polarizing public discourse. Raising his profile in the ranks of right-wing student and youth organizations in the communally sensitive coastal belt of Karnataka, Suvarna came to international prominence during the 2022 hijab row in Udupi, when he was a key player in defense of restrictions on Islamic headscarves in schools. Catching the thrust of that hard-line Hindutva ideology, he contested and won the Udupi Assembly constituency on a BJP ticket and attracted attention with such aggressive language and strong opposition to secular and left-wing bodies. His statements have drawn criticism from legal experts and political opponents who say that pointing to historic flashpoints (such as the 1992 demolition) to threaten contemporary political rivals is too dangerous to allow to happen in the present context and calls for judicial and administrative action.
