Chandauli Temple Demolition Sparks Political Row After PWD Worker Dies

The demolition of an old Kali Mata temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Mughalsarai (Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar) has become the subject of political tension after a PWD employee was killed during this operation, with opposition leaders accusing the BJP government of destroying religious heritage while the administration claims that the action was in the name of a road-widening project.

The incident took place during the demolition of the temple, which local reports say is more than a century old and located along the busy GT Road. It was moved from a road expansion project and the deity had already been moved to a new temple before the demolition began, officials said.

Tragedy struck when a portion of the temple dome rolled onto the road during the demolition. Baldev Yadav, a 58-year-old PWD worker, died after the falling structure struck him, according to reports. Several others suffered injuries in the incident, raising questions about whether safety measures, as well as barricades, were in place before heavy machinery was deployed.

The accident became a political issue very quickly.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav strongly criticized the government for demolishing temples and called for the restoration of Hindu temples. In a social media post, he claimed the Kali Mata temple was demolished at night and said it was in contrast to the BJP’s public image of a protector of temples.

The BJP has not accepted those allegations. Government officials have said the demolition was part of a planned infrastructure project in order to widen GT Road to reduce traffic congestion. Local sources say the government had already moved the temple and moved the idol before it dismantled the temple.

The incident has generated heated discussion on social media where opinions are sharply divided.

Some users expressed sorrow for the death of the PWD worker and said the accident showed there were serious lapses in safety planning. Traffic hadn’t stopped completely in the area and barricades had not been built before demolition was going on.

A third group focused on the temple itself and argued that heritage structures need to be protected more and that authorities should focus on preservation or careful relocation wherever possible instead of demolition.

Others defended the road-widening project, stating that infrastructure development inevitably results in difficult decisions and if a structure has to be relocated legally, public safety and improved connectivity should be the top priorities.

The debate also reopened many larger discussions on the use of bulldozers in government, a topic that is often a political flashpoint in Uttar Pradesh. Demolition drives and the implementation of bulldozers have been a recurring issue between the BJP and other opposition parties.

Apart from the political arguments, many online users across the spectrum seemed to agree on one topic: Baldev Yadav’s death should be thoroughly investigated. Calls have been made for an independent investigation into whether demolition protocol was adhered to, if precautions were taken for the safety of workers and the public, and whether liability should be assigned if there is a lack of accountability for negligence in this case.

The Chandauli temple demolition has become more than a local civic issue as investigations continue, and it now sits at the intersection of infrastructure development, religious heritage, worker safety, and political messaging. The incident is still a matter of controversy both on the ground and across social media.
