The worker was busy in the demolition of a reinforced concrete roof at a construction site when he accidentally came into contact with a live electrical source, a local report said. The powerful current from the electric force caused him to collapse instantly and his fellow workers to be shocked.

The CCTV footage (as reported by the report) shows the moments before the accident. As the worker works on the roof slab, a sudden electric shock sends him down and he loses control and falls. His co-workers rush to his aid, pulling him back to life and taking him to a nearby hospital.

Although doctors were quick to respond, the worker was dead on arrival, the report said. The incident again emphasizes the dangers faced by construction workers when electrical and workplace safety are not properly enforced.

The cause of the accident is being investigated. Electrical wiring, poor safety measures, and negligence are expected to be responsible for the accident, the officials said. Recommendations for preventing similar tragedies in the future could be made.

Construction sites are among the most hazardous workplaces, especially during demolition when workers are exposed to falling debris, structural collapse, heavy machinery, and electrical hazards. Electrical lines should always be removed before demolition and workers should be equipped with the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) including insulated gloves, helmets, and safety boots, safety experts say.

Labor rights advocates have also highlighted the significance of continuous safety training and strict adherence to occupational safety standards. Construction workers in India are still mostly exposed to dangerous environments in which safety is poor or not implemented.

The CCTV footage has received a lot of attention online. Many social media users have been mourning the death of the worker and calling for safety standards to be improved at construction sites. Some users have asked for a hold-up if negligence is found in the investigation.

Workplace accidents involving electrocution are a recurring issue in India’s construction industry. Better planning, mandatory electrical inspections, proper supervision, and continuous workers’ training can significantly reduce such incidents, experts said.

That fact is a grim reminder of the dangers faced by construction workers every day, and we have to take proper safety precautions, keep up on it so that we can constantly get inspections and comply with occupational safety laws to protect workers’ lives and prevent preventable workplace deaths.
