C. Joseph Vijay marked World Photography Day at the Secretariat with an image of photographers who’ve been doing this for years and record government events and public life. The day was to be celebrated on August 19 and photography is a great way of keeping history alive and communicating stories beyond words.
The gesture of the Chief Minister to photographers was a touchstone for our celebrations and was an acknowledgement to the professionals who usually stay behind the camera while covering large events.
World Photography Day is celebrated on 19 August and the science and culture of photography. On that day CM Vijay also offered his wishes to photographers through a social media post. The Tamil Nadu government press release on 19 August 2026 said photography is a medium to freeze time and keep the memory and history of the past with a person’s eyes. He also wished photographers the best of luck in their art journey.
The Chief Minister interacting with the photographers at the Secretariat was an interesting reversal of roles. Photographers tend to move around official events, positioning themselves to take pictures of ministers, officials, visiting dignitaries and important announcements. But this time, photographers were the ones behind those cameras themselves. CM Vijay photographing people from the media community was a symbol of their contribution to documenting public affairs.
Photography is so prevalent in journalism and public communication. One photograph will be enough to capture an event and provide visual context to an event that would not be recorded in a written report.
Political meetings, government announcements, cultural celebrations, and other events where ordinary people attend and have their activities take place are the things photographers do to record a picture of everyday life, and these are just as important, if not more so, than photographs. They make their work come from time and space, patience, skill, technical experience and the ability to recognize the moment and the person in the moment in a very dynamic world.
The Tamil Nadu government’s World Photography Day message also highlighted the wider artistic value of photography. “Photographs are a social mirror and they can reflect the pages we take in life and move history forward,” the official message said. It also highlighted how photographs are able to document experiences and events that are difficult to express in words.
For photographers who are in the media, the job is far more than just shutter-pressing of cameras. News photographers work in such a demanding job environment and must handle fast events and respond to the events as quickly as possible while maintaining accuracy and professionalism. Their photos will be the basis for news stories and the most important thing about it in news from here on out to people's eyes, which is to see the scale, atmosphere and human context of the event.
So the World Photography Day moment at the Secretariat was more than just a photo opportunity. CM Vijay photographed himself and drew attention to those who work in the world of documenting others. The gesture was also indicative of how public figures and visual media work now as a way to remember political and public events.
Social media has made visual storytelling even more important. Now, photos can reach audiences almost instantly and important moments can be shared widely in minutes; a photo can be shot and shared immediately. Professional photographers also play a vital role in ensuring that big events are captured in context, clarity and journalistic purpose.
The celebrations at the Secretariat come as World Photography Day was observed all across India and photography exhibitions and programmes were being held to pay homage to photographers. It is the day to honour both the creative and documentary side of the profession.

CM Vijay’s gesture thus became an appropriate moment. Rather than being the subject of photographs, the Chief Minister was behind the lens and photographed those who usually take photos of him and other public figures. The moment was a simple but meaningful reminder that every great picture has a photographer behind it.
While photography is an evolving field with smartphones, digital cameras, artificial intelligence and social media, the core goal remains unchanged: to preserve moments and tell stories through images. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's World Photography Day message and his interaction with photographers at the Secretariat made that continuing role at the forefront and also acknowledged the professionals who document the state's public and social life.
