Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has triggered a political debate after he made his case in Ayodhya that people who once offered namaz on the steps of Hanuman Garhi were the ones who committed historical wrongdoings.
He spoke in a public meeting in the temple town and said Ayodhya is a religious and cultural site.In a speech to the gathering, CM Yogi said, “These are the same people who had committed the sin of offering namaz on the steps of Hanuman Garhi.”
That’s how Ayodhya has changed and the government is trying to restore what he said was the city’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister said Ayodhya has undergone a huge revival in recent years, especially after the construction of the Ram Mandir. Infrastructure development, tourism growth and the city's rise as a pilgrimage site attracted devotees from all over India and abroad Gandhi, 2017.
Yogi Adityanath also spoke about the sanctity of religious places and India’s cultural traditions. “The government is also committed to preserving the heritage of Lord Ram and Ayodhya as a global spiritual centre,” he said.
And the historical sensitivity of Ayodhya and Hanuman Garhi is not lost in his remarks.
He has spoken in the name of Hanuman Garhi, which is one of the most respected temples in Ayodhya and has been in Hindu mythology forever. But the Chief Minister’s remarks of the past may provoke political reaction and public debate.
BJP supporters have defended the comments, saying they are historical realism and the government is committed to preserving cultural heritage. Opposition parties will say such comments will breed communal discord and distract from governance problems.
For a long time now, Ayodhya has been at the center of India's politics and religious conversation.
And since the Ram Mandir has been opened, the city has undergone rapid transformation roads, transportation and hotels have been widened, and the city’s infrastructure e.g., hospitals and other hotels has been upgraded.
In the past few decades, the Uttar Pradesh government has frequently highlighted these developments as part of its vision to see Ayodhya into an international spiritual tourism hub.Political experts say the statements regarding Ayodhya are usually the focus of national attention as the city is a historical and a religious one in itself.
With the state and country's political situation on the rise, the comments of senior leaders of the state and country are likely to be closely watched by the people and the government. It has so far not received any response from the opposition parties, which can only discuss the Chief Minister's comments.
But the statement is likely to be the subject of discussion in political circles and on social media in which talks about history, religion and governance continue to dominate public conversation.
