As the winter months have gotten harsher in Karnataka, there were biting cold wind gusts, heavy fog and rapid temperature shifts. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for people to leave their homes in the early mornings and the elements are starting to infiltrate daily life. Some districts on the street are set to experience light rain over the weekend, adding yet another twist to conditions.
The severe cold in North Karnataka:
The severe cold is reaching into the Northern districts of Karnataka. They include Dharwad, Bidar, Gadag, Vijayapura, and Belagavi, which have reported extremely low temperatures. A low minimum temperature of 12.4°C in Dharwad is a striking indication of the severity of the cold state. Those in these zones are now struggling to cope with the chill, particularly in the early-morning and late-evening hours. The minimum temperatures in central districts including Mandya, Shivamogga, Davanagere and Hassan are between 9°C and 14°C. And that sharp drop has people shivering and the cold wave disrupting daily routines; The number of people at risk would have a direct impact on the health and well-being of the populace, including the vulnerable ones. Farmers, labourers and school kids especially are struggling with such conditions.
Unpredicted Weather for Bengaluru:
The capital, Bengaluru, is experiencing erratic weather. Hazy and dull in the mornings, then sunny in the afternoons. This abrupt move between fog and sun is becoming a chaotic and frustrating experience. Bengaluru is at its minimum temperature of around 15°C and maximum is at 26°C. Those ups and downs are having an impact on the health of the people, and many have reported colds, coughs, and high fever symptoms to the press. Bengaluru Weather Centre announced that no significant changes in Bengaluru’s weather are anticipated until the 14th of January. That will mean foggy mornings and warmer afternoons for the next few days for residents.

The department has recommended farmers to take precaution and to plan their activities accordingly.
Public Advisory:
Sudden changes to temperature can be dangerous, especially for children and older people. Health experts have cautioned the affected individuals that being exposed to cold winds and fog may cause respiratory conditions and seasonal illnesses. When people are outside, they must make sure to wear warm clothing and drink hot water to remain warm. Farmers have been advised to remain alert to the rain forecast. However those helping with crop growing, harvesting and drying need to protect their produce from unexpected showers. The department has also recommended that people do not travel excessively on foggy mornings, when visibility may be poor and accidents can happen.

Northern Karnataka is suffering from severe cold in some parts, and Bengaluru remains erratic in terms of the weather. The next weekend will likely witness showers in southern areas such as Mysuru, Kodagu and Hassan, but heavy rain is not anticipated. Most especially farmers and at-risk groups like kids and the elderly, the Meteorological Department has urged the public to be cautious.
