A disturbing news came from Dombivli, Maharashtra, and police had an arms and social media star in suspended probation after finding high volumes of illegal firearms in his bungalow. Surendra Pandurang Patil, who is a popular gangster-like star on Instagram, had just been out of jail on bail two weeks with new accounts, was arrested after investigators found some sort of “war chest, for a small militia” at night.

The crime branch police took Patil home late last night as officers patrolled Dawdi’s house on Saturday night following a tip. A newly installed shoe rack at last was suspicious to investigators who arrived at their site looking for some kind of weapons when the team dismantled it; there was a small compartment stored for weapons inside of its own home. Police recovered seven guns, 371 live cartridges and 167 air gun pellets valued at about Rs.10 lakh. Sharp weapons, such as swords, sickles (koytas), knives and steel rods as well as two high-powered smartphones worth around ₹2 lakh.

Among the seven firearms were five country produced pistols and revolvers and two air guns were on hand. Some of the guns were engraved with "Made in USA" and "Special Auto" which were professional looking in their appearance. An inventory of cartridges and pellets also confirmed that the cache was filled and ready.

Patil told police that the weapons were meant for “creative purposes” in his Instagram videos, reports said. With more than 3 lakh followers, firearms had been used as props as well, one of the main means for promoting the gangster image on his channel. But because of his criminal history police are trying to get the gun used for selling to local criminals. New charges have now been laid under the Arms Act and Maharashtra Police Act.

Public authorities said yesterday’s case is a part of a larger trend in which social media influence can be fueled almost totally through illegal weapons. The show on gangster culture online is not only a charade for children, but there are very serious implications on public safety.

The arrest of Surendra Patil emphasizes the convergence of crime with social media. What started as reels for online fame has grown into an arms cache. At the same time, law enforcement and digital culture need to be careful and proactive against that. That can result in real‑world damage if violence is spread online and it need not be tolerated, the case reminds us to do justice under threat as a parent and for our society that all is not lost.
