An 18-year-old National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant died on Thursday in Greater Faridabad just hours before the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the NEET UG 2026 results. Police are investigating the incident.
The student who lived with her family in Sector 88, Greater Faridabad, had recently appeared for the medical entrance examination. First reports indicate she was under stress after estimating her probable score using the unofficial answer key released online, the police said.
Family members told investigators she had anticipated a much higher score but now thought she may get about 600 out of 720 marks based on her answers to the answer key. They said she had been very disappointed recently and was now worried about her performance.
Police said they received information about the incident at 12:15 p.m. and reached the residential complex soon after. The student's body will be sent for postmortem examination and all aspects of the case are under investigation, the police said. There is no evidence of foul play at this time, officials said.
The family of the student is from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, and has been living in Greater Faridabad for some time. Her mother was in Vijayawada when the incident occurred, said the police. Her father Kateshwar, a senior executive of a private company, told investigators that she was his elder daughter.
Family members described her as a bright and hardworking student who had consistently performed well academically. She had also received high marks in her Class 12 exams and was preparing to pursue a medical career.
NEET UG 2026 Results Announced
Later on Thursday, the National Testing Agency (NTA) declared the results of NEET UG 2026, one of India’s largest entrance examinations for undergraduate medical education.
More than 11.21 lakh candidates are eligible for the undergraduate medical, dental, AYUSH and allied health science courses in the entire country. According to the NTA, 138 candidates scored above 690 out of the maximum 720. Over 93% of those top scorers were first-time NEET candidates and more than 99% were from the age group of 17–19 years.
This year’s examination received particular attention when the original NEET UG was cancelled following allegations of a paper leak. The examination was re-conducted on June 21, making NEET UG 2026 one of the most closely watched entrance exams in recent years.
Exam Pressure and Student Well-Being
The incident has once again brought home the immense pressure placed on students preparing for highly competitive entrance examinations. Mental health professionals have been quick to stress that exam results do not determine one’s worth or future and students and families should seek help when academic stress becomes too much.
The Faridabad incident is still being investigated and police are gathering statements and other evidence to establish the full circumstances regarding the case, the police said.
