Ganderbal Chief Education Officer (CEO) ordered suspension of Bilal Ahmad Sheikh, Aabid Mohi-ud-Din Bhat, Peer Mudasir and Gowhar Rashid Kullu, following the recommendation of the Nodal Officer of Transit Camp Manigam, who also serves as the Assistant Commissioner (Revenue), Ganderbal.

Mismatch in Registration Records

According to official reports, the action was taken after officials had identified a mismatch in the number of pilgrims registered at the transit camp and their entries on a fee registration form generated in the name of one of the suspended teachers.

The Nodal Officer also said the involvement of the other three teachers could not be ruled out because they were present at the registration centre on the day the alleged discrepancies occurred. As this was a serious matter, he asked the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ganderbal, to register an FIR immediately and conduct a detailed investigation.

Inquiry Underway

The district administration has taken cognisance of the alleged irregularities and the matter is under investigation, he said.

The suspension is an administrative matter pending the outcome of the investigation and does not in itself establish guilt.

Registration Process Under Tight Security

The alleged irregularities concern the on-the-spot registration facility for pilgrims travelling on the annual Shri Amarnath Yatra. Only after documents are verified and the eligibility criteria met, registration at Manigam Transit Camp is allowed.

The administration has advised pilgrims to apply for registration only through authorised centres and avoid dealing with touts, middlemen or unauthorised individuals who would promote the registration process to receive money.

Massive Administrative Deployment

The 57-day Shri Amarnath Yatra, starting on July 3, is one of the country’s largest religious pilgrimages. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has put dozens of officials, including teachers and education department staff, on transit camps and registration centres to help with pilgrim management, document verification and registration. The pilgrimage is expected to end on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.

Police investigations will now determine whether any of the discrepancies were due to negligence or intentional manipulation and whether any other people were involved in the alleged irregularities.
