A major tragedy was almost averted after a Delhi Public School (DPS) bus caught fire in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad on Saturday.
Fortunately, no schoolchildren were in the vehicle when it happened and there was no tragedy to follow.
The bus had not been in motion, so it was caught up in a bright fire, fire investigators said. Thick black smoke quickly came out as fire engulfed a large part of the vehicle, drawing the attention of residents and passersby.
Firefighters came and extinguished the flames in a short time.
A technical malfunction or a short circuit in the electrical system caused the fire, but a detailed examination of the vehicle has not yet been completed, and officials are seeking answers.
The bus’s maintenance personnel will investigate to see if mechanical problems or neglect caused the incident, authorities said.
Videos posted on social media showed the school bus completely engulfed in flames, with thick smoke rising high into the sky. Parents and the local community were shocked and concerned about the school bus fire the images went viral. Many people voiced relief when they discovered that no students or school staff were inside the bus at the time of the fire.

Firefighters stopped traffic around the place to perform rescue and cooling operations, and the damaged bus was later removed for forensic examination.
The incident once again underlined the necessity of continuous maintenance and safety inspections of school transport vehicles. School buses should undergo regular mechanical checks e.g. electrical wiring, fuel systems, engines, emergency equipment in order to minimize the chances of such accidents, experts say.
Parents and education authorities have repeatedly stressed the need for strict compliance with transport safety norms, especially as thousands of students rely on school buses every day.
Fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and periodic fitness certifications are considered essential safety measures that can help prevent accidents or minimize damage during emergencies.
Although the Ghaziabad incident ended without casualties, it serves to emphasize the danger of vehicle fires.
After their investigation is complete, authorities will prepare a detailed report, and school management will also check on their transport fleet to ensure the safety of students.
The timely absence of children from the bus turned what could have been a catastrophic event into a narrowly escaped one. School and transport officials are also being advised to be vigilant and to maintain preventive maintenance with the objective of protecting the students and staff.
