A shocking incident is playing out in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad where the body of a seven-year-old girl has been found in an under-construction mall and police are investigating the case of child safety and security at construction sites.
According to police officials, the girl was missing for some time before her body was found inside the under-construction commercial complex. Informed by local residents, police teams were on site, surrounded the area and carried out forensic and legal examinations. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
A post-mortem report and forensic evidence will be critical to determine the sequence of events, investigators said. At this stage, officials have not disclosed the exact cause of death, saying it would be inappropriate to speculate before the investigation and receipt of the medical examination report.
Police have a full investigation going on, looking at CCTV footage from the vicinity, interviewing witnesses and investigating the child’s movements before she went missing. Officers have discussed the case with family, construction workers, security personnel, and local residents to try and find some leads.
The child’s identity is not known until her late teens to keep the family’s privacy in mind. The authorities have asked the public and media not to spread rumours or unverified information that may hinder the investigation and cause further strain on the bereaved family.
The police said all angles are being investigated, whether the incident was accidental or connected with any criminal activity. A post-mortem report and the scientific evidence, witness statements, and post-mortem report will be made available and appropriate legal action will take place against those responsible if there is evidence of a crime being committed, the police said.
The incident has revived discussions regarding safety standards on under-construction sites, especially in those cities where unfinished buildings can be open to the public. Construction sites have many hazards, experts say, including open pits, exposed structures, heavy machinery, and restricted areas. Developers and contractors have to take sufficient measures to secure fencing and control access (including warning signs and continuous security) to avoid unauthorized access.
Child safety advocates have also highlighted community awareness and parental vigilance. Children tend to gravitate towards large construction sites out of curiosity, they say, so it is important for authorities and builders to keep them from being accessible to the public.
Forensic teams will analyse physical evidence collected from the scene and digital evidence, such as surveillance video and mobile phone records, may be useful to investigators. Police have assured the family that the investigation will be conducted impartially and every effort will be made to get to the truth.
The Indian law, legal experts say, is that every investigation must be based on evidence and no individual can be held guilty merely on suspicion. Any accused person has the right to a fair legal process and criminal liability can only be established through the judicial system after due investigation and trial.
Residents of the area have expressed grief over the incident and called for stronger security measures at construction sites. Many have asked civic authorities to carry out regular inspections of unfinished commercial and residential projects to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

The tragic death of the young girl underscores once again the need for strong child protection measures, effective urban safety planning, and strict enforcement of construction safety norms. Police are asking the public to help with the investigation and to immediately report any information to help detectives to determine the facts of the case.
Because of the investigation and continuing inquiry, officials have been assured that updates will be given on the investigation based on verified findings. But the focus then is to find out what happened in the incident from a very serious and evidence-based perspective, to support the grieving family and ensure that justice is done according to the law.
