Gorakhpur Customers Protest Against Illegal KYC Money Demand at Local Gas Agency

An eye‑opening case of a local gas agency demanding money illegally under the cover of KYC verification has come to light in Gorakhpur. A report of Kanhaiya Gas Agency in Nausad has drawn residents’ anger. When they protested against the demand, they were bullied and misbehaved by agency employees, said the customers.

According to the report, customers who visited the agency were asked to pay money to complete their KYC. KYC is a standard process for ensuring customer identity, but is not supposed to involve extra charges. The demand for money raised suspicion among customers, and they questioned the legality of the practice.

When some customers refused to pay and protested, they were allegedly abused and treated badly, witnesses told us. The situation quickly escalated, and we saw people get shocked at the staff’s behavior. We’ve since heard that people are calling for the agency to be fired now,” the manager said.

Local police have been informed about the incident, and preliminary inquiries are now in place, said the report. The agency is expected to be investigated for violating consumer protection laws and LPG distribution guidelines. KYC is a mandatory procedure but should never lead to illegal charges, said the police.

Consumer rights groups have also spoken out, calling on customers to report such incidents right away. Both agencies should strictly follow rules set by oil companies and government regulators, they said, and if they break those rules, they should be punished.

With such a huge consumer pressure, one should have consumer awareness. Most customers do not know what to do with their rights and may be subject to illegal demands. And the Gorakhpur case shows how collective protest can expose wrongdoing and push authorities to act.

It also raises questions about accountability in essential services like LPG distribution. Gas agencies are crucial to households, and misuse of power has a direct impact on families.

The illegal demands in KYC’s name do not only damage customers’ relations but also undermine the trust they have in service providers. The Gorakhpur case is evidence that vigilance and awareness are required to protect consumer rights.

The allegations against Kanhaiya Gas Agency in Gorakhpur demonstrate that the monitoring and enforcement of consumer protection laws need to be very tight; the agency should constantly monitor the agencies, and consumer protection laws should be strengthened. Customers must keep a check and report suspicious practices and be on guard, and authorities should ensure that services are provided consistently and transparently.
