A 52-year-old woman in Gurugram was arrested on Thursday after a video of her allegedly assaulting her domestic help went viral on social media. The incident took place on July 24 at DLF The Camellias in Sector 42, Gurugram, but only after a neighbour recorded video of her assaulting her domestic help was posted online.
The woman in question is Ruchira Sachdeva, a resident of the high-end residential complex. The Gurugram Police said Sachdeva and her domestic help had an argument related to work problems. The domestic worker quit her job after two days.
The incident was captured in a roughly 90-second video that was allegedly recorded secretly by a neighbour. The video shows the domestic help walking out of a kitchen area before Sachdeva follows her and grabs her by the hair. She appears to confront and reprimand the woman before hitting her with a mobile phone.
The domestic help can be seen in the video trying to get away from Sachdeva’s grip; the woman continues to pull her hair and hit her on the back while speaking aggressively. She is also apparently telling the domestic worker to stand in a corner.
The video has raised significant concern about domestic workers’ treatment and the kind of power imbalance between employers and household staff, from a labor perspective. The allegations also raised questions of whether workers who are vulnerable are able to seek immediate help when they are abused inside private homes.
Sachdeva had taken away the domestic help’s mobile phone and prevented her from leaving the house, the person who recorded the footage said. These claims are part of the information being examined by the police and should be distinguished from facts independently established during the investigation.
The Gurugram Police said its preliminary investigation indicated that there had been an argument between the two over work-related matters before the alleged assault. The domestic worker quit the job three days after the incident.
The police action began after officers took suo motu cognisance of the video. A team from Sushant Lok police station subsequently initiated action and arrested Sachdeva on Monday in connection with the assault case.
But the accused was released on bail from the police station soon after her arrest. The police's initial action on the video and the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident triggered the arrest and subsequent bail process.
The case has once again made domestic worker safety a matter of concern in urban residential complexes where household staff can be in private homes for hours. Employers can also depend on domestic workers for their living, and it is common to not report mistreatment for financial or social reasons.
Neighbourhood or witness videos can also play a crucial role in bringing about allegations of abuse. The police action was reported to have taken place after the video was circulated and not an immediate complaint at the time of the alleged assault.
