At first sight, the incident was reported to neighbours after they noticed a strong foul odour coming from the apartment on September 6. They notified the police and investigators went to the residence and discovered the crime scene.

Based on preliminary forensic findings, investigators believe the murder took place between 24 and 48 hours before the body was found. The evidence will give investigators a much clearer picture of what actually happened inside the apartment.

Riya Talukdar worked in a boutique in the AC Market area of Fancy Bazar, one of Guwahati’s major commercial centers. She was originally from Noonmati, the town. Reports indicate that Riya was orphaned and raised by her brother.

The accused, Ramanujan Goswami, is from Gauripur in Assam and has been described as a person struggling with drug addiction and had allegedly spent around three months at a rehabilitation centre. Police are investigating his background as part of the larger investigation, but the circumstances of his rehabilitation and any possible link to the crime are not yet established.

A crucial development in the investigation relates to an alleged dispute between Riya and Goswami on September 5. It was reported that the couple was in a violent fight that day. Goswami later left the apartment at around 8 pm, neighbours said. A big mystery now is whether the dispute was related to the killing.

The case was disclosed to the authorities the following day when neighbours detected the foul odour and notified the authorities. Police were on the scene and began processing the scene, while forensic experts were called in to collect evidence.

The discovery has shocked residents in the residential neighborhood and caused a lot of concerns about what really happened in the apartment, police said. Forensic evidence, witness accounts, available surveillance footage, and other evidence will be used to reconstruct what happened.

Goswami surrendered to the police on the night of September 6, according to the report of his arrest. His surrender will let investigators question him on his movements, his relationship with Riya, and the circumstances surrounding her death, the report said.

The motive behind the alleged murder has not yet been conclusively established. Police are investigating several aspects of the case and are expected to establish the sequence of events through questioning and forensic examination. The motive has not yet been concluded, the authorities said.

Forensic investigators are also examining the residence and other evidence related to the case. The evidence could prove crucial in determining the approximate time of death and whether the reported movements of the accused matched the physical evidence at the scene.

But investigators must establish the facts using evidence to determine how the incident occurred before making conclusions about the nature of the alleged crime.

Riya Talukdar's death is still under investigation by the police. Police are trying to determine the sequence of events and motive of the crime and to verify the circumstances surrounding the accused's movements before and after the murder.
