Sridevi allegedly sought to liquidate 236 grams of gold (approximately ₹16 lakh in the current market). Yet her acts and the failure to provide proper documentation or credible explanations about the source of the jewelry made a few gold company employees nervous.
How the Plot Unraveled
Even modern gold buying organizations comply with the strict KYC (Know Your Customer) processes and are trained to spot indications of distress or suspicious transactions. When Sridevi didn’t offer satisfactory answers, the staff discreetly called the Ranebennur City Police. A local police team arrived at the scene to question the woman.
During the preliminary questioning, Sridevi was found to have admitted that she had stolen the jewelry from Hubballi, and she had even gone to Ranebennur specially for the sale of the jewelry, hoping that the distance from the crime scene would allow her to elude being discovered.
Police Action and Investigation
All 236 grams of gold have been taken by the Ranebennur police and is officially seized. In coordination with Hubballi Police authorities, they are trying to determine the original owners of the jewelry, and whether First Information Reports (FIRs) of these items have been filed that match the description. The police are looking more closely at whether:
- The suspect is a member of a larger organized group of burglars.
- She has other cases with the same crimes, trying to sell stolen property in different districts.
- Some accomplices were working with her to move the stolen goods over district lines.
A Commendable Act of Vigilance
District police have commended the staff of the gold company for their quick reactions. Without the timely tip-off, police officials said, the suspect could have laundered the stolen assets successfully, making it all but impossible to trace the jewelry to the victims. Sridevi is still in judicial custody and a case has been registered in respect of theft and possession of stolen property under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
