Cyclone Ditwah Alert: Rain Forecast for South Interior Karnataka; Storm to Hit Tamil Nadu Coast Nov 30

The Cyclonic Storm 'Ditwah' (pronounced: Ditwah), currently centered over coastal Sri Lanka and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, is intensifying and tracking towards the Indian coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the system will reach the coasts of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh by the early morning of November 30, 2025.

While the primary threat of extremely heavy rainfall and gale-force winds is concentrated in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the state of Karnataka is also expected to feel the effects of the cyclonic system.

The IMD's latest bulletin confirms that the circulation pattern associated with Cyclone Ditwah is expected to bring widespread rainfall to parts of Karnataka.

  • Alert Region: The main region under a rain alert is South Interior Karnataka (SIK).
  • Rainfall Timing: Heavy rainfall is specifically forecast for isolated places in South Interior Karnataka on November 29, 2025.
  • Effect on Bengaluru: Bengaluru, falling under the SIK region, has also been issued a Yellow Alert, indicating the likelihood of moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms accompanying the weather system's peripheral effects.
  • Post-Cyclone Impact: Thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning is likely over South Interior Karnataka until December 1, as the storm system moves away from the Bay of Bengal coast.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh Brace for the Core Impact

Cyclone Ditwah, which has already caused significant devastation and over 50 deaths in Sri Lanka, is now the focus of intense preparedness efforts across the southeastern coast of India.

  • Expected Landfall Area: The cyclone is expected to approach the stretch between North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh coasts by November 30.
  • Red Alerts in Tamil Nadu: The IMD has issued Red Alerts for several coastal and delta districts of Tamil Nadu, warning of isolated extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm) on November 29 and 30.
  • Wind Warning: Gale wind speeds reaching 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast from the evening of November 29 till November 30 morning.
  • Safety Advisory: Fishermen have been strictly advised to suspend all operations in the affected areas of the Bay of Bengal until December 1. Coastal residents have been urged to remain indoors and follow all disaster management advisories.
