Chikkamagaluru was in chaos for the night after heavy rains and strong winds hit the region, damaging infrastructure, disrupting power supply and bringing the city topsy-turvy as well as disrupting normal life in some communities. The torrential rain continued even through the night, and residents were left with uprooted trees, fallen power poles, damaged properties and power outages in parts of the city.
According to local reports, rain began late in the evening and intensified as the night went on. Strong gusts of wind added to the severity of the weather conditions, resulting in several large trees being uprooted in various parts of the city. The fallen trees blocked roads and damaged nearby buildings, causing inconvenience to residents and commuters.
One of the worst-affected areas was Kote Layout, where several large trees were blown out by the wind. In addition to the tree damage, roof tiles from many houses were blown away, and the residents in the area were exposed to the miserable weather, too. The damage was still being assessed by owners and citizens the night after the storm, and cleanup by city officers and residents was a matter of the day.
The weather also made its impact on the court complex, where more than ten electricity poles collapsed as a result of strong winds and heavy rains. This also caused power lines to collapse and created safety concerns for pedestrians and motorists.
Near the Inspection Bungalow (IB), a compound wall collapsed due to the storm. No injuries were reported, but the collapse showed how bad it was for the city due to the weather.
The widespread destruction of electricity infrastructure has resulted in prolonged power outages in some neighbourhoods. Almost half of Chikkamagaluru city was left without electricity as several poles and power lines were damaged, officials said. Electrical department personnel worked through the night and into the morning to identify damaged sections and restore power to affected areas as soon as possible.
Residents expressed concern over the recurring damage caused by seasonal storms and called for stronger preventive measures, such as trimming vulnerable trees and reinforcing ageing infrastructure. Many areas had difficulty due to the lack of electricity, affecting households, businesses, and essential services.
As a result of this, municipal authorities, emergency response teams and electricity department officials have been in action to clean up streets and clear fallen trees, fixing damaged power lines and clearing roads to ensure smooth movement of traffic. Authorities have also advised residents to be mindful of damaged electrical infrastructure and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.
The recent rain is a reminder that extreme weather events during the monsoon season can be difficult to navigate. No serious injuries or deaths have been reported so far this season, but damage to public infrastructure and private property has been substantial. Residents should remain vigilant and be on the lookout for more rain as further rainfall is forecast to hit the area over the next few days.
