A Mercedes driving at a speed believed to have been extremely rapid plowed into Shyam Raj without warning. The impact was crushing; it threw him onto the road and triggered fatal injuries. The car then hit the bridge railing, overturned, leaving behind a mangled vehicle at the scene.

Incredibly, the driver fled just after the crash, leaving the posh vehicle with a West Bengal registration number, according to local reports. Authorities were then informed shortly after, and local police arrived after the accident to start an inquiry. The victim was taken to a hospital nearby; however, he died from his wounds. His body has since been sent to be postmortem examined.

The police are also looking at CCTV from around the area and following the vehicle’s registration to pinpoint and recapture this fleeing driver. Preliminary results imply overspeeding was a contributing factor in the crash, prompting much more investigation into the role of alcohol or other substances. This horrible event opened up critical problems related to road safety again, particularly in the dark hours when traffic enforcement is generally less strict.

The Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge, popular with tourists, has also been flagged in the past for rash driving. In the meantime, law enforcement has told the public to be careful while stopping around active roads even for a few seconds. But now the victim’s family continues to suffer an irreplaceable loss, transforming what should have been a simple evening out into a devastating tragedy.
