Hyderabad: Youth Congress staged a protest outside the BJP office in Hyderabad demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over recent police action against students.
The demonstration brought political activity to the city as Youth Congress workers raised slogans and criticised the Centre over the reported handling of students.
Protesters said the police action during the student demonstration was excessive and called for accountability from those involved.
The Youth Congress said the treatment of students was unacceptable and called for the Union government to act. Demonstrators also used the protest to question the role of the Union Home Ministry and called for Amit Shah to step down as the head of that ministry.
Images from the protest showed Youth Congress members gathering outside the BJP office and raising slogans. Security arrangements were put in place around the area as the demonstration took place.
They come as political discussions continue to rage over the treatment of students during demonstrations.
Student protests can draw a great deal of political attention and can become very well-publicized if there is police action or the use of force involved.
The Youth Congress leaders said students have a right to peacefully express themselves and any alleged use of force should be examined.
The matter needs to be addressed as well as the facts of what happened should be addressed and action taken if there is any wrongdoing, they said.

BJP and government officials can respond to the accusations and give their version of events. As of the information available for this report, the allegations made by the protesters remain claims and should be considered in that context.
The incident has also underlined the shift in the political discourse towards student and law and order issues and other student protests in Telangana.
Hyderabad, being a crucial political and administrative centre, has seen protests by many political and student organisations in this regard.
The Youth Congress protest will only add to the political debate on purported police violence and government response to protests.
Opposition groups have frequently cited the incident to criticize the Centre's handling of protests, and police action is usually taken to maintain public order and security in opposition groups’ view.
These developments could be further affected by statements from police, Telangana government, BJP and Union Home Ministry.
Any official findings about the alleged police action could help clarify what happened during the student protest.
For now, the Hyderabad demonstration reflects the Youth Congress’ demand for accountability and its call for Amit Shah’s resignation over what protesters described as police action against students.
