IndiGo Offers Full Refunds, Waives Fees After Govt Order on Flight Cancellations

Following a stern warning from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) regarding soaring airfares and consumer protection, IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced immediate measures to mitigate passenger inconvenience caused by a high volume of recent flight cancellations. The airline is now offering full refunds and waiving rescheduling fees for passengers affected by the operational disruptions.

The move comes after the central government directed airlines to ensure fair pricing and consumer-centric policies amid the ongoing IndiGo crisis, primarily triggered by the grounding of several aircraft due to mandatory engine inspections and maintenance issues.

Relief Measures for Affected Passengers

IndiGo’s swift action aims to address the widespread frustration caused by cancellations and the sudden increase in ticket prices for rebooking:

  • Full Refunds: Passengers whose flights have been cancelled due to the operational crisis will now be eligible for full and immediate refunds for their booked fares.
  • Waiver of Rescheduling Fees: The airline is waiving all associated rescheduling and cancellation fees for affected passengers, allowing them to book a different flight or date without incurring extra charges (though fare difference might still apply).
  • Transparency: IndiGo is also expected to enhance communication channels to promptly notify passengers of flight status changes, giving them adequate time to adjust their travel plans.

Government Pressure Yields Results

The government’s directive earlier this week emphasized that airlines must not exploit situations of reduced capacity by hiking prices and must prioritise passenger convenience. This intervention, warning of potential regulatory action, appears to have pressured major carriers, especially IndiGo, to soften their policies.

The airline stated that these measures are temporary and intended to alleviate the stress on passengers while they work on resolving the underlying technical issues affecting their fleet capacity.
