The incident occurred near Gorakund Square on Monday and left behind a large pit on the road and revived the question of the quality and longevity of infrastructure projects being carried out in the city.
The affected stretch was part of a Smart City project worth around ₹40 crore and was built about three years ago. The road was developed as part of wider efforts to upgrade urban infrastructure and civic amenities in Indore. It was only after a pipeline pressure test on Thursday that the road and underground infrastructure were found to not be well designed and constructed to cope with pipelines.
The incident occurred while authorities were testing work connected with a new 24-hour water supply pipeline. Pipeline pressure testing is an important part of commissioning a new water distribution system because it helps identify leaks, weak joints and other potential problems before the network is put into regular operation. But the collapse of an existing road during the process has raised questions about the condition of the road and the construction standards followed beneath it.

With the damaged part near Gorakund Square repaired, people and the public will expect to know the reason why it did not happen immediately rather than just clean up the road. A thorough investigation might reveal if there were deficiencies in the original construction, problems related to the pipeline installation or weaknesses that came into play after the pipeline was repaired.
