Hockey World Cup 2026: India Face Must Win Battle Against Pakistan After England Loss

India’s Men’s Hockey World Cup campaign has suddenly become much more important after a 4 to 2 defeat against England. The defeat has put India under pressure ahead of their final Pool D match against arch rivals Pakistan.

India started the tournament with a 3 to 1 win over Wales. That got the team going very early but the defeat to England changed the plans. England has already secured a place in the next round after winning both their games and moving to six points at the top. India has three points and Wales and Pakistan have one point each.

India will now face Pakistan in a high pressure match in Amstelveen, Netherlands. The match will decide whether India move into the second round or have to settle for the classification stage.

The good news for India is that the qualification equation is still largely in their hands. They do not need to depend on England or Wales if they win their final match.

What India Need Against Pakistan

The easiest way for India to qualify is to beat Pakistan.

A victory would earn India six points. Wales can get up to four points even if they beat England in their final match. This means India would finish in the top two of Pool D and will qualify for the second round regardless of what happens in the England versus Wales match.

A draw against Pakistan would also give India a strong chance of qualification. India would move to four points while Pakistan would reach two.

However, India would then have to keep an eye on the England vs Wales match.

If England beat Wales or the two teams draw, India would qualify. Wales would not be able to reach four points in either of those situations.

But it would be even more complicated if Wales beat England. Wales would then also reach four points, putting them level with India.

In such a scenario, the tiebreak rules of the tournament determine which team will finish second in the tournament. The first factors include the number of wins, goal difference, and goals scored. India's current goal difference is zero and Wales's goal difference is minus two.

So while a draw for India would be enough, they should not be making such complicated calculations. A win against Pakistan would give them complete control over their qualification.

The worst possible result for India would be a defeat

If Pakistan beat India, Pakistan would move to four points, and India would remain on three. India would then be unable to finish second in the pool. Their World Cup campaign would move into the classification stage instead of the main title race.

India has to fix their weaknesses.

India's defeat against England showed some areas in which the team needs to improve before the Pakistan match.

India had a good first half against England. England scored first, but Harmanpreet Singh and Dilpreet Singh helped India take a 2 to 1 lead into the break.

But England changed the game completely after half time. They scored three more goals and India could not come up with any reply. Defensive errors played a major role in the defeat.

India also need to improve their penalty corner conversion

India had four penalty corners against England but converted only one. That is an area the team cannot afford to ignore against Pakistan.

Pakistan have dangerous drag flickers and can create problems from penalty corners. Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh is also one of the team’s biggest strengths in this area, so India will want to create more opportunities and make better use of them.

The defensive unit will also need to remain disciplined. Giving Pakistan easy penalty corners could create unnecessary pressure.

India enters the match with a strong recent record against Pakistan. They defeated their neighbours 7-1 and 4-3 in the European leg of the Pro League earlier this year. Pakistan's last victory over India came in the 2016 Champions Trophy.

But past results will not guarantee anything in a World Cup match.

Pakistan have one point after losing to England 1 to 4 and drawing 3 to 3 with Wales. Now they have to win against India if they are to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

That makes the India-Pakistan match very important for both sides.

India has the advantage because a draw could still be enough in most scenarios. But the safest approach is simple. India needs to win, avoid defensive errors, convert their penalty corners and remain calm under pressure.

There’s also a reason why the match against England matters beyond the group stage. Under the new World Cup format, teams that qualify together from the same pool carry their head-to-head result into the next stage. If India qualifies alongside England, England's 4 to 2 victory will carry forward. That means India would begin the second stage at a disadvantage.

But for now, India cannot think too far ahead.

The immediate target is Pakistan.

Win and India are through.

Draw and India are still in a strong position, but they will need to watch the Wales result.

Lose and their main World Cup campaign is over.

The stakes could hardly be higher for India's final Pool D match.
