One of the main accused in Jamui harassment case, Nandan Yadav, was shot in the leg in a police encounter in Bihar on Tuesday, September 22. Yadav was taken into custody and taken to Jamui Sadar Hospital for treatment, sources said.
The incident comes just days after a video of a teenage boy and a girl being harassed by a group of people on a roadside in Jamui district has gone viral on social media. On 19 September, the two Class 10 students were returning to the area after their coaching classes.
Jamui Superintendent of Police Bishwajeet Dayal had said police had established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which was headed by a woman police officer to find and arrest those involved in the incident.
Police said about seven people had been identified from the video and raids were being conducted to trace the remaining suspects.
Before the latest development, three accused had already been arrested in connection with the case. Yadav and another accused were arrested after the police operation and the total number of arrests was reported to have reached five.
According to media sources, the police action was taken when police were taking action to catch Yadav. Some reports even said he tried to escape during the operation and suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to hospital for treatment. The original case came to public attention after video of the harassment was revealed online, which led to widespread concern and prompted the police to speed up the investigation.
The video also led to a police investigation against the circulation of this material as it revealed the identity of a minor victim. Bihar police registered an FIR against around 120 social media profiles for circulating this video.
Police are still looking for other people involved in the incident, they said. They have viewed the viral videos and have evidence to establish what role each suspect played.
The Jamui case has made the safety of minors in public spaces more important as well as the responsibility of social media users when sharing videos of victims. Local authorities have said that material identifying minors involved in such cases should not be circulated.
The investigation is still ongoing and police are looking for the other suspects while the suspects who had already been arrested are going through court.
