Political Controversy: Jana Sena Suspends Leader Over Comments on Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar

Jana Sena Party suspended its Telangana leader Bethi Mahender Reddy following remarks against Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar. The disciplinary action takes the party to a new level of internal discipline and is consistent with its political alliance with BJP which is an important part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The decision was taken by Jana Sena Telangana unit after it was reported that Mahender Reddy had made comments against Bandi Sanjay Kumar. “The remarks were inconsistent with its principles and could harm the party’s public image and political relations,” he said.

The party said Mahender Reddy's suspension will be temporary and will remain until a thorough internal inquiry is concluded. Jana Sena said the disciplinary action should not be read as a final verdict, as the leadership will verify all facts of the controversy before making a permanent decision.

The party leadership also stressed that any personal differences between political leaders should not be allowed to undermine the organization’s values or create unnecessary public controversy. Mahender Reddy’s alleged statements were his personal views and not Jana Sena’s official position, it said.

Jana Sena has always maintained discipline is one of the core elements of the organization. “Leaders and workers are expected to behave responsibly around the public,” the party said, with leaders and workers not only to make statements on political topics but also to have relationships with alliance partners.

The issue has attracted political attention because Bandi Sanjay Kumar is a senior BJP leader serving as Union Minister of State for Home Affairs. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has remained a close ally of the BJP since the NDA. Political analysts say the quick suspension shows Jana Sena’s intention not to create any strain in the alliance.

Experts say the move sends a strong message that the party is not only that it will take action regardless of a leader’s position but also that it is willing to act in a disciplined manner when statements are seen as damaging to the party’s interests. It is a sign that political parties are increasingly concerned about message discipline as public comments gain significant attention in the modern age of social media and digital platforms.

Bethi Mahender Reddy is a senior Telangana advocate and previously served as Jana Sena's Karimnagar Parliament Coordinator. Prior to joining Jana Sena, he was in the BJP and as such the incident was very sensitive due to his political background and long-standing association with leaders from both parties.

Jana Sena has assured supporters that the inquiry will be fair and unbiased. Party officials said the investigation into the allegations would look at the context of the allegations to see if further action should be taken or suspension should be lifted.

The development comes at a time when political parties are preparing for future electoral challenges in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The alliance is very much about unity amongst partners and any public tension between senior leaders is highly political.

Political commentators say the suspension is also to fortify the organizational discipline of Jana Sena and to keep the personal disputes from overshadowing the party’s political agenda. It will be hoped that by acting in a timely manner, the leadership will reassure both party workers and alliance partners that it is still committed to responsible political conduct.

Bethi Mahender Reddy will now be suspended from all party responsibilities until the inquiry is done, and Jana Sena said its board will be able to make its final decision only after carefully examining all relevant information, with its position being that fairness and accountability will guide the disciplinary process.
