The Election Commission’s ongoing voter list revision in Jharkhand has led to the identification of more than six lakh deceased voters, one of the largest electoral roll clean-up exercises in the state. The verification process is to make sure that the electoral rolls are accurate, transparent, and free of duplicates or ineligible entries before elections.
According to election officials, the removal of deceased voters is part of the annual electoral roll revision across the country.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and local administration teams are doing extensive door-to-door verification to find voters who have passed away, permanently moved their residence, or are otherwise ineligible to stay on the voter list.
According to officials, over six lakh names of deceased people were identified during the verification drive. The exercise will help to restore the credibility of the electoral system by making sure that voter identities are not used in the wrong way and that only voters eligible to be on the electoral rolls are included.
The Election Commission has emphasized that the deletion of names is transparent. Before removing any voter, officials check records through field visits, local inquiries, and supporting documents. In some cases, family members also provide information about the death of registered voters.
Aside from deceased voters, the revision also identifies duplicate registrations and voters who have moved permanently to another constituency. Updates to the database are necessary for maintaining a reliable database and for election management.
Election authorities have pleaded with citizens to verify their names on the electoral rolls and report any discrepancies. Those eligible voters who have recently turned 18 years old or who moved their place of residence must apply for inclusion or correction according to the timetables.
Political observers say that periodic revision of voter lists is critical for public confidence in democratic institutions. Clean electoral rolls eliminate the chance for electoral fraud and help to protect the integrity of the voting process.
