In the city’s biggest civic enforcement exercise to curb public inconvenience and traffic congestion, Kalaburagi City Corporation conducted a large-scale anti-encroachment drive along a busy stretch of the city’s traffic. The operation covered the area from Jagat Circle to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Circle, where unauthorized structures occupying roads and footpaths were removed.
The drive was conducted jointly by civic officials with the help of law enforcement.
Encroachments Removed Using JCB Machines
During the operation, officials demolished some unauthorized shop extensions, temporary structures, and roadside encroachments that had occupied public roads and pedestrian paths for years.
Heavy machinery, including JCB excavators, was sent to clear illegal structures that were obstructing traffic movement and reducing the available space for pedestrians.
Many of these encroachments have narrowed roads and pedestrian paths, making daily commuting difficult and giving rise to traffic bottlenecks in the city’s commercial centers, officials said.
Based on the Supreme Court Directions
The anti-encroachment drive was in accordance with Supreme Court directives to remove illegal occupation from public roads and footpaths, officials said.
The exercise aimed to restore public spaces for pedestrians and facilitate smooth vehicular movement in one of Kalaburagi's busiest business corridors.
Civic authorities said the action was part of a wider effort to improve urban infrastructure, public safety, and traffic management across the city.
Public Reactions
The operation drew strong support from residents, commuters, and motorists who appreciated the removal of encroachments that had long caused traffic congestion and inconvenience.
Several citizens supported the civic body’s efforts; reclaiming public roads and footpaths would increase accessibility and improve the overall appearance of the city’s streets and footpaths, they said.
But the drive also worried small traders and roadside vendors who have relied on these places for a number of years.
Some shopkeepers were worried about losing business and asked the authorities to establish other vending spaces or to find rehabilitation measures.
Civic Body Appeals for Cooperation
Traders and commercial businesses should avoid occupying public roads and footpaths in the future, officials said, and continuous inspections and enforcement drives would continue across the city.
The corporation highlighted that clear roads and pedestrian pathways in the city are essential for public safety, reducing traffic congestion, and making the development of the city more sustainable.
They also appealed to citizens and business owners to comply with civic regulations and help protect public spaces from illegal encroachments, and to support civic institutions.
More Enforcement Drives Expected
The Kalaburagi City Corporation also indicated that similar anti-encroachment drives could be carried out in other parts of the city where illegal occupation of roads and footpaths continues to affect public movement.
Officials stressed that urban development and traffic management remained top priorities and that future actions would also be implemented in accordance with legal provisions and judicial directions.
This latest operation reflects the city’s ongoing efforts to create safer, cleaner, and more accessible public spaces while balancing civic administration with the concerns of local businesses.
