As of Thursday, vehicle owners will be allowed to settle their pending traffic fines by paying half of the total penalty, with the remaining half due later. The special concession scheme will be available for 20 days, from June 21 to July 10; it is expected that this scheme will apply between June 21 and July 10.

A similar one-time settlement scheme had been implemented in Karnataka in the past and received a huge public response, enabling the authorities to recover substantial traffic penalties. The government, after the success of the previous move, then decided to give motorists another chance to pay the debts at a lower cost.

The order was issued by Pushpa V.S., Under Secretary of the Transport Department, Karnataka. People with pending cases registered under the Transport Department between 1991 and 2022 can avail themselves of the 50% discount and settle their cases during the period.

The scheme will also apply to traffic violations reported by the Police Department's electronic challan (e-challan) system. But the concession will only apply to cases registered up to May 2026. Vehicle owners with pending e-challans issued on or before May 2026 can pay just 50% of the fine amount and have their cases resolved.

The initiative is expected to not only provide financial relief to citizens but also to reduce the backlog of traffic violation cases that remain unfilled. Over the years, law enforcement officials say a lot of people have not paid traffic fines because of oversight, financial constraints, or the accumulation of multiple penalties. The discounted settlement program will be a good way to get people to settle out of the backlog.

This will help comply with traffic laws and increase government revenue through voluntary payments. Car owners should check their overdue fines and take advantage of the offer as soon as the deadline ends, and not wait until then to be fined.

The latest concession does not apply to traffic violation cases registered after May 2026. It is said that the government may consider such benefits for newer cases in future settlement drives, but no official announcement has been made so far.

Transport officials have advised motorists not to wait until the last minute and to pay the outstanding amount of the penalty within the stipulated time period. After July 10, the standard penalty rates will be resumed, and vehicle owners may be required to pay the full amount of the fine.

The scheme will benefit lakhs of car owners from different regions in Karnataka and will give them a new opportunity to clear long-pending traffic fines and regularize their records while paying only half of the original penalty amount.
