The Karnataka government raised the Dearness Allowance (DA) to support the cash quantum to the lakhs of beneficiaries across the state from the order already made.
The new Dearness Allowance is up from 14.25 per cent per year to 15.75 per cent per annum, an increase of 1.50 per cent. The new DA applies retroactively beginning 1 January 2023. It is hoped this decision will help many government employees, retired persons and family pensioners increase their monthly income levels, and will also help them cope with the upsurge in costs of living and inflation.
DA Changes for State Government Employees
Officials in Karnataka said the new DA would apply to Karnataka government employees who are paid on salaries under the 2023 revised pay scales. This latest incarnation will have Dearness Allowance at 15.75 per cent of basic remuneration, up from 14.25 per cent a year earlier.
The change is part of a series of government-imposed changes to DA rates to offset the impact of inflation on salaried workers. Pensioners Also Covered. The assistance has even helped pensioners and family pensioners through the Karnataka government. This includes:
- State government pensioners.
- Family pensioners.
- Pension from the consolidated fund of the state to retired officials at aided educational institutes.
- Family pensioners of aided institutions.
And for pensioners also, the Dearness Relief rate rose from about 14 per cent to 15.75 per cent, effective Jan.
Help in an Era of Rising Costs
The DA hike can provide some financial relief when inflation and rising household costs continue to squeeze families throughout the state. Employee associations and pensioners’ groups and organisations have hailed the shift as aiding government workers to cope with inflationary rates on food, transport, health services and education.
The Dearness Allowance revisions are important because they are directly related to the impact of rising cost of living and consumer inflation, experts said. Periodic increases keep salaries and pensions sustainable if purchasing power rises over time. Effects on State Expenditure.
The DA revision will almost certainly significantly raise costs for the state government, too, on the basis of how many employees and pensioners are currently being paid under the ruling. But officials say the act is to protect staff welfare and balance the books.
This government order will be implemented over the next few weeks via the relevant departments and the treasury offices, and all qualifying employees and pensioners will be able to see their arrears recorded up to January 2023. The news brought some relief and positivity to government employees of all ranks and retired employees across Karnataka.
