Karnataka IAS Officer Mahantesh Bilagi, 2 Relatives Die in Tragic Kalaburagi Car Accident

A pall of gloom has descended upon the bureaucracy and public service sector in Karnataka following the tragic death of senior IAS officer Mahantesh Bilagi, the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Minerals Corporation Limited (KSMCL), and two of his relatives in a devastating car accident near Jewargi in the Kalaburagi district.

The incident, which occurred near the Gounalli Cross in Jewargi taluk late on Tuesday evening, has been confirmed by police officials.

Details of the Fatal Crash

Mahantesh Bilagi (51), a 2012-batch IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre, was travelling from Vijayapura to Kalaburagi to attend a family wedding. He was accompanied by his brother, Shankara Bilagi, and another relative, Iranna Shirasangi (sometimes referred to as Eeranna Bilagi in initial reports).

  • Cause of Accident: According to initial police reports, the accident occurred when the driver of the Innova car, reportedly speeding, tried to avoid hitting a stray dog or two-wheeler that suddenly came onto the road.
  • Impact: The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and spin before falling to the roadside, leaving the car completely mangled.
  • Victims: Shankara Bilagi and Iranna Shirasangi died on the spot. Mahantesh Bilagi suffered grievous injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Kalaburagi, but he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

An Efficient Officer's Legacy

Mahantesh Bilagi was known for his efficient and people-oriented work throughout his career. Prior to his posting as MD of KSMCL, he held several key positions, including:

  • Managing Director of the Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM).
  • Deputy Commissioner of Davanagere and Udupi districts.

The news of his untimely passing has led to condolences from political leaders and senior officials, with the state's Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister expressing their profound grief over the "irreparable loss to society." A case has been registered at the Jewargi Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
