Jammu and Kashmir has been put on high alert ahead of Independence Day as intelligence inputs warn of possible terror attacks in the region. Security agencies have stepped up surveillance, searches, checkpoints and verification exercises as the Kashmir Valley is set for Independence Day on August 15.
The increased security measures are in line with fears that terrorist groups might launch targeted attacks or sow fear in the region ahead of the national celebration. Security agencies are on the hunt for attacks on security personnel, non-local workers and any other vulnerable groups while keeping public gatherings and official Independence Day activities going without any disruption.
The latest alert comes after two targeted killings in July in which a Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel and two non-local labourers were killed. The incidents have raised fears among security agencies about efforts to target people who may be perceived to be vulnerable or symbolic targets. Security issues have also worsened after the release of a threat note targeting Kashmiri Pandits.
Multi-layered Security Arrangements Across Kashmir
The intelligence inputs have led to stronger security arrangements in the Valley. Srinagar has been particularly under surveillance because of Independence Day functions scheduled in the city and the huge numbers of security personnel, officials and civilians.
IGP Kashmir V K Birdi said security arrangements have been strengthened across the region and that the measures are not limited to Srinagar. Birdi said security agencies have sanitised areas in the Valley and implemented multilayered arrangements to address potential threats.
Search and verification operations have also been intensified in several areas of Srinagar, including Lal Chowk and surrounding localities. Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel and Special Operations Group teams are doing checks at markets, shopping complexes, hotels and other sensitive locations.
Hotels and Public Places Under Scrutiny
According to the security exercise, hotel records and guest registers are being checked and visitors’ information is being verified to detect suspicious movement. Such checks are designed to identify people who may have entered or moved through sensitive areas with potentially harmful intentions.
Markets and commercial areas are being particularly targeted because they are crowded and could potentially be targeted to create panic. Security personnel are already doing verification exercises and there is a visible presence at busy places in order to prevent possible attacks.
The security arrangements are expected to be even more rigorous at venues hosting Independence Day celebrations. Access controls, checkpoints, surveillance and area domination exercises are being used to secure important areas and surrounding routes.
Intelligence Inputs Point to Possible Targeted Attacks
Based on intelligence inputs from the authorities, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) could try targeted attacks against security personnel, non-local labourers or other vulnerable groups. The inputs have also raised concerns about a possible attack in a crowded area with the intention of creating fear and projecting a terrorist presence ahead of August 15.
Therefore, security agencies are working to identify potential threats before they can happen. More monitoring, checking and verification is going on, and in the most sensitive places, there is heavier patrolling, surveillance and verification. Police are also looking at how people move around the most important public spaces and those places that are very sensitive from a security point of view.
The focus on preventive measures comes as officials work to minimize any disruption in Independence Day celebrations, as well as security agencies coordinate their efforts to protect public safety and to allow people to be part of events on India’s Independence Day.
