## Khan Sir Gets Interim Relief in Defamation Case Linked to TV Anchor Anjana Om Kashyap; Court Bars Coercive Action
Khan Sir, popular educator Faisal Khan, who is also known as Khan Sir, got relief from a Bihar court in a defamation case linked to allegations made by television journalist Anjana Om Kashyap. The court, in its hearing on Saturday for his anticipatory bail plea, said it would not take any coercive action against Khan Sir till the next hearing.
The development comes as several YouTube teachers and content creators have been accused on social media and digital platforms of spreading defamatory remarks against Anjana Om Kashyap. Khan Sir came up in the matter and he sought anticipatory bail.
During the hearing, advocate Arvind Kumar Mawar told the court that the police had submitted the case diary as directed. They handed over the diary to the public prosecutor for investigation and preparation for the next stage of the proceedings. The case diary will be returned on June 23 and June 25 is fixed for final arguments.
In the meantime, the court ordered that law enforcement officials should not take any harsh measures against Khan Sir, and protect him from arrest until the case was heard again. The anticipatory bail application will now be discussed in detail during the June 25 hearing.
The case has attracted a lot of public attention as Khan Sir has a huge online following with which he can influence other aspirants for competitive exams across India. He is one of the top online educators in India, and his teaching style and his wide-reaching educational platform are well known.
The legal proceedings have been at the same time as another high-profile controversy involving coaching centres in Patna. There have been complaints, counter-allegations and legal action by coaching centre operators and educators. But at present the court proceedings regarding Khan Sir are mainly related to the defamation allegations against Anjana Om Kashyap.
Lawyers say that a court’s decision is not a final judgment about the merits of the case. Rather, it is temporary protection while the courts consider all the evidence, police records and arguments of both sides.
If the court grants anticipatory bail to Khan Sir and the other defendants in the case, the next hearing will be held on June 25. What will be the outcome in the context of social media commentary, online content creation and defamation laws in India?
Khan Sir has interim relief because the court has ruled that no coercive action is to be taken against him until future orders.
