What began as joy after another academic achievement fell to ruin in the Kolar district when a 15-year-old student drowned while at a well. And in the past few weeks, the community has been crushed and grieving the loss.
The dead person is named Kiran, a boy from Sonnawadi village of Mulbagal taluk. Kiran had just finished his SSLC (Class 10) examinations and gone out with his friends to celebrate this new achievement. The group reportedly swam in a nearby well as part of the celebrations.
But the well was deep, and Kiran apparently slipped or fought it out in the water before disappearing, it was said. His friends, unable to locate him, sounded an alarm, alarming residents in the immediate moment. They called emergency services, and the fire and rescue patrol arrived on the scene within two minutes of these details.
Kiran was searched in the well. However, things eventually got much worse, and the hope of finding him alive eventually faded away. Local police from the Mulbagal Rural Police Station locality have taken a case and investigated it. They are also drawing on statements of witnesses and friends, who were at the scene to attempt to piece together the exact sequence of events.
The death is devastating, and it’s overshadowed what’s supposed to have been a fun situation. The local people of Sonnawadi village mourned their boy’s death, when he was now rejoicing in education and hopeful for years to come.
State officials have reiterated to everyone, especially the youngsters, that you should be careful when swimming in open waters (wells, lakes and ponds).
A lot of those places don't have any security, and anything can go wrong in no time. Such incidents should be a cautionary tale about how rapidly a gathering without the proper precautions can escalate into catastrophe. Parents and the community would be wise to counsel the children with little or no supervision.
