Hyderabad, Telangana: A political issue has been raised in Telangana after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s recent remarks on Lord Ram, Lord Shiva and the cultural identity of North and South India.
BJP MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy has attacked the Telangana Chief Minister for dividing Hindu society and weakening the country.
Vishweshwar Reddy, speaking in Hyderabad, also referred to the Congress leadership and Rahul Gandhi while commenting on Revanth Reddy’s political approach.
Revanth Reddy should have an influence on Rahul Gandhi but the Telangana Chief Minister was being influenced by the Congress leader, he added.
“He wants to divide Hindu society and make India weak,” Vishweshwar Reddy said, calling it a sad incident. Revanth Reddy being associated with Rahul Gandhi is understandable because both leaders belong to the Congress party, but political influence was moving in the other direction, he said.
The BJP MP’s comments are part of a wider political row over comments by Revanth Reddy at a media event in New Delhi. The Telangana Chief Minister asked why BJP leaders did not use the slogan “Jai Shri Ram” as well as “Har Har Mahadev.”

Reddy also said in a speech that the worship of Lord Ram and Lord Shiva are economic and regional identities.
Reddy’s comments have been met with strong rebuke by BJP leaders who have accused him and the Congress of creating divisions based on religious and regional identities. The BJP has said religious figures and traditions should not be linked to political or social divisions.
The matter has also brought the political debate over the identity of North and South India into focus. Reddy’s comments referred to “Aryans” and “Dravidians,” while BJP leaders have rejected the political framing of Hindu religious traditions along these lines.
Vishweshwar Reddy’s statement adds another layer to the ongoing BJP-Congress conflict in Telangana. Revanth Reddy’s views were specifically directed at Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leadership and the Chief Minister’s approach could lead to division in society.
The Congress has its own political view about Revanth Reddy’s questions and BJP leaders have continued to fight it publicly. This is the continuing political battle between the two parties on religion, regional identity and the future direction of national politics.
The remarks are now a part of a larger political debate in Telangana between Telangana leadership, the Congress party, the BJP and other parties. The controversy has also led to a debate about how religious and cultural content of political discourse is used in the political arena.
