Indian boxer and Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain won praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi after she objected to an inaccurate representation of the map of India at a restaurant in Glasgow during the 2026 Commonwealth Games. A video of Borgohain went viral, but now the video has attracted the attention of the Prime Minister whose words to her are heard in the conversation.
Borgohain, a native of Assam in India’s northeast, felt the map of India on napkins and associated with the restaurant’s branding wasn’t accurate. The map missed parts of India’s northeast, as well as Jammu and Kashmir. The boxer brought it to the restaurant management’s attention rather than leave it alone.
In the video that has gained so much attention, Borgohain said the omission of the Northeast was particularly painful for her. She said the northeastern part of India is part of India and should not be left out of the country's picture. Her response was calm and direct and the boxer emphasized the importance of depicting India correctly rather than turning the incident into a fight.
The issue was likely to have occurred during the Indian team's stay in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games. Borgohain was one of India’s most prominent players at the Games and had already been awarded a medal in the women’s 75kg boxing category after she was in the semifinals. She and weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu had also been selected for big roles at the opening ceremony in which the Indian contingent was going to be represented.
The restaurant admitted to the mistake and promised to correct the map and its branding. Boxing Federation of India (BFI) president Ajay Singh said the restaurant did amend the wrong representation after Borgohain raised the issue. The restaurant later apologised on social media and the restaurant said they had taken the allegations to the authorities.
The incident was more special because Borgohain comes from Assam, one of India’s northeastern states. To her, the omission was more than a matter of cartographic accuracy but also representation and identity. Her decision to speak up raised questions that people from the northeast have often raised, that the region is not well represented or not taken seriously in the larger frame of discussion about India.
Narendra Modi later referred to Borgohain's response when he spoke to her. Modi praised the boxer for taking a stand and told her that her video will be remembered for a long time. His comments brought the incident back into the national spotlight and emphasised the need for accurate representations of India’s territorial map.
As an Indian athlete competing on an international stage, Borgohain’s action was also viewed in the context of her role. Athletes representing the country are often seen carrying India’s identity beyond sporting venues, and the incident showed how even an inconsequential issue of a restaurant napkin or logo can be of great significance when it comes to national representation.
The controversy also highlights the importance of accuracy in branding national maps in promotional materials or public-facing content. An inaccurate map can lead to confusion and, particularly in a country as geographically diverse as India, can be very sensitive. It has also opened up a larger debate about the visibility of India’s northeast and the responsibilities towards the country abroad. Borgohain's message to many people was straightforward: every part of India is important and deserves to be represented accurately.
