A 34-year-old woman was killed, and six others were injured after a car allegedly crashed into a motorcycle and three autorickshaws waiting at a traffic signal in Mumbai’s Malad West town in the early hours of Monday.
The accident took place at 8 pm Sunday at Mamlatdarwadi-SV Road junction. CCTV footage of the area recorded the car hitting the vehicles waiting at the busy intersection, causing panic and chaos, a police station spokesman said.
The deceased woman was Priyanka Satra, a law graduate and mother of two. She was traveling on a motorcycle with her husband, Mayank, when the accident happened.
Car Allegedly Rams into Vehicles at Signal
According to police, Priyanka was sitting on the pillion of the motorcycle being ridden by her husband when the car collided with them.
The impact threw both Priyanka and Mayank off the motorcycle.
Priyanka sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital. Doctors later declared her dead.
Her husband sustained fractures and back injuries in the crash and was admitted to a hospital for treatment.
The car continued moving after hitting the motorcycle and also crashed into three autorickshaws that were waiting at the traffic signal.
Police said the drivers and passengers of the autorickshaws were injured. Six people besides Priyanka were reported injured in the accident.
The CCTV footage has become a primary part of the investigation since it shows the sequence of the crash at the intersection.
70-Year-Old Driver Arrested
The car driver, a 70-year-old Krishna Chamankar of Pune, was arrested after the accident, police said.
Chamankar told police during questioning that he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while driving from the Malad subway towards SV Road.
His answer is now being examined in the crash investigation.
A medical exam showed no alcohol in his blood, according to police.
The authorities are also looking at CCTV footage and other evidence to discover exactly what happened, the police said.
Driver Released On Bail
Chamankar was first produced before a magistrate following his arrest.
He was later released on bail on a cash bond of ₹15,000.
The decision has fueled anger among Priyanka’s family members and relatives who want the driver to be punished much more harshly.

Family Raises Allegations of Preferential Treatment
The accident also led to allegations of treatment provided to Chamankar after his arrest.
Priyanka's relatives alleged that the accused received preferential treatment while he was in police custody.
