His trip shows that Malta seeks to build up ties with India which remain the cornerstone of modern trade talks in the Global South. Malta-India relations have taken an important stride with Dr Borg’s arrival. He is slated to meet with Indian leaders and officials to consider sectors of cooperation like trade, investment, maritime sector, renewable energy and tourism. His attendance at the Raisina Dialogue reflects Malta’s investment in making a positive contribution to international discourse on peace, security, and development.

India and Malta have a six-decade-long diplomatic relationship. Both have worked together in pharmaceuticals, shipping, financial services and other sectors over the years. Indian companies have established a presence in Malta, while Maltese businesses consider India a burgeoning market. The visit of Dr Borg will certainly open avenues for new collaboration, in particular, technology and culture.

Malta, in the Mediterranean, is strategically placed in Europe’s maritime and trade networks. India’s engagement with Malta bolsters its reach into the European Union and Mediterranean. Dr Borg will also address India–EU relations, reforms in world institutions like the United Nations, and regional stability during his meetings. Malta’s participation in the Raisina Dialogue also represents Malta’s dedication to multilateralism and dialogue.

For India, hosting figures like Dr Borg bolsters its global presence and creates relationships with smaller but strategically critical countries. For Malta, that visit is an opportunity to further connect with one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. The talks will not only center on trade but also on themes of climate change, digitalization, and global safety and security.

Dr Ian Borg’s visit to Delhi is not merely diplomatic formalism. It echoes Malta’s move to enhance relations with India through global consultations at the Raisina Dialogue. The visit, in the context of both countries' interest in deepening cooperation in trade, culture and international affairs, is key to encouraging dialogue and working together in our rapidly interconnected world.
