Food delivery is ingrained in our habits. Companies like Zomato facilitate the process of ordering food and letting people use it as they choose. But delivery workers do face unfair treatment from customers at times. A very recent incident emphasizes the way that some people act, which means that we need to show more respect to those who work hard to serve us.
A couple sat in the car, drinking and waiting for their food order. They had ordered via Zomato. When the delivery person arrived, he tried to check the car number in order to ensure that the food reached the correct customer. This is a basic step to avoid mistakes. Yet the man in the car entered the wrong car number while placing the order. He began shouting at the delivery employee without giving a fair explanation or calmly correcting his mistake. Using language laden with harsh and inappropriate insults, telling the employee what the driver was doing that was not his fault. He blamed the assistant for a job he had done for the driver which was not his. Only the delivery person was actually following the rules: He should be doing his job, but he had to confront some stupid and senseless fury and disrespect.
The delivery worker remained professional despite being reprimanded repeatedly with bad words. He did not resist or speak rude words. He just tried to explain the situation and complete the delivery. This is a testament to the patience and care of many, many delivery assistants who have their own battles with the system but are delivering to our customers with respect.
The action of the man in the car was truly unacceptable. Delivery workers are not at fault for any mistaken statements made by customers. Shouting at them not only insults the dignity that they deserve--it has a foul taste inside. Instead I will say that I suspect the workers in the picture spend long hours driving from place to place, often under bad conditions, to get people the food on time. They are owed kindness, respect, not insults.
These incidents serve as a sign that everyone must act with respect. Delivery workers are human beings who need to be treated with courtesy, customers should see this. Even a minor error, such as typing in the wrong car number, should be dealt with calmly. It shows terrible character to shout and use bad words. As a society, we also need to be taught to treat service workers with dignity. Otherwise, we wouldn’t even have our day-to-day comforts.
