A shocking suspected dowry death case has been reported from Mandya district. She was found dead in a village well under mysterious circumstances. The victim’s family charged the husband and his family members with having murdered her while continuing harassment with dowry, dumping her body into the well to appear like an accident.
The incident took place in Javanahalli village, when Nagaveni, a mother of two, was discovered dead in a local well. Witnesses and family members have become visibly upset about the death, and police have embarked on an investigation into the charges. Nagaveni, whose parents were the complainants, married Bhattegowda some six years ago.
Her household is said to have given an amount of 80 grams of gold and ₹60,000 cash dowry for the wedding. The couple eventually had two children, one son and one daughter. But Nagaveni’s mother and father contended that although the dowry between them was paid during the wedding, her in-laws and she had to constantly provide extra money for the bride when the husband continued harassing her, both mentally and physically, and her in-laws weren’t letting her off the hook.
Nagaveni's parents argued that Bhattegowda was continually pressuring Nagaveni to move more money out of her parental family home. Family members said they were arranging ₹30,000 again about six months ago and gave it to the accused, saying they had wanted to settle the disputes and safeguard the marriage of their daughters. But what the alleged harassment said persisted.
The victim’s relatives also reported that Nagaveni was attacked inside her house on Thursday midnight. They say that she was killed inside her house, and her body was thrown in the well to destroy evidence and deceive investigators. The villagers found themselves wailing, while the relatives of Nagaveni began to lose their grip, demanding justice for the girl who had also passed away.
Her parents claimed the husband’s family continued torturing her for dowry and killed her. Another source on suspicion reported that Nagaveni's husband, his mother-in-law, and other family members were missing in the case, according to authorities. Their sudden vanishing act has bolstered suspicion over the case.
A case has been reported at Shivalli Police Station, and police are searching for the absconding suspect. Locals, local relatives and neighbours are also being interviewed in the investigation. The cause of death is expected to be verified by postmortem examinations and forensic evidence, authorities stated. Police are investigating whether the death resulted from murder, suicide or some foul play.
The incident is an early example of what has been a chronic issue in India for decades: harassment and violence against women due to dowry. Though this act is heavily criminalised under the country’s strict anti-dowry laws, so many things revolve around this act, like ghosts of what happened in that crime, and the consequences that sometimes follow such actions can be tragic.
Women’s rights activists and residents have called for strict action against those responsible and for Nagaveni and her children, who are now out of their mother’s care, to receive speedy justice.
