Mumbai and its surrounding suburbs suffered severe disruption as monsoon showers pounded the financial capital and led to widespread waterlogging, traffic jams, flight delays, and train disruption. The heavy rains caused normal life to be affected in part of the city, prompting officials to warn the city’s inhabitants to be cautious in their travels.
The rain, which intensified in the early hours of the day, flooded several low-lying areas, turned roads into streams, and made commuting for thousands of office-goers, students, and daily travellers a nightmare. Water was in heavy accumulation in South Mumbai, Central Mumbai, and the city's suburbs in the city, resulting in traffic jams and slow-moving vehicles.
Waterlogged highways disrupted traffic in Andheri, Kurla, Sion, Dadar, Bandra, and parts of Navi Mumbai. Buses were delayed, and ride-hailing services saw longer waiting times as a result of bad road conditions and heavy traffic.
Flight Operations Affected
Air travel also suffered from the bad weather conditions. Strong winds, low visibility, and continuous rain forced some flights to be diverted to nearby airports. Pilots and air traffic controllers at the airport said flight schedules were affected by the weather, and they had to work to make sure that passengers were safe in the challenging conditions.
Passengers were advised to check flight status before leaving for the airport because delays and rescheduling of services affected domestic and international services. Long lines were reported in airport terminals as people waited for updated departure and arrival information.
Local Train Services Hit
Mumbai’s lifeline, the suburban railway network, also felt the impact of the heavy rainfall. Water accumulation near tracks and signalling problems led to delays on multiple routes. Services on the Central, Western, and Harbour lines were delayed, making life difficult for lakhs of commuters who depend on the railway network every day.
Railway officials deployed emergency teams to monitor track conditions and ensure safe operations. Despite the disruption, train services continued with caution, although at some stations, trains were overcrowded due to delayed schedules.
Authorities on High Alert
Civic authorities, disaster management teams, and emergency response personnel stayed on high alert throughout the day. Pumps were put to work at vulnerable locations to drain accumulated water, and municipal staff continued to clear blocked drains and remove debris.
Officials urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in flood-prone areas. Residents of low-lying areas were also encouraged to keep up with the weather bulletins and heed safety warnings issued by local authorities.
Schools and office campuses in some areas saw lower participation as people worked from home or postponed travel plans due to the worsening weather conditions.
IMD Predicts More Rain
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and neighbouring districts for the next 24 hours. Weather experts attribute the heavy rainfall to active monsoon conditions along the western coast and favourable atmospheric systems over the Arabian Sea.
If the heavy rain continues, waterlogging, localised flooding, and traffic disruption are expected, meteorologists said. Fishermen are also advised against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions and strong winds along the Maharashtra coastline.
As Mumbai braces for another spell of intense monsoon activity, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for any emergencies. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and stay informed through official weather updates to ensure their safety during the ongoing monsoon season.
